Yeah cause even if the story sucks I still want to know what happens.

VoodooHak

Same here.

It's funny that people complain that gaming should be considered an art form. Then I see people skip the thing that give you context to what you're playing and is part of the game's creative vision. Even if the story is bad, I value the medium and the games creators enough to give a game a fair shake.

If gamers don't even want treat their medium seriously, why should the general public?

Damn straight

Starcraft or Sins of Solar Empire are the deepest game's I've played in terms of strategy. Starcraft is basically computergame chess, and Sin's of a Solar Empire is basically one long war spread out over a galaxy. It rocked my sox. Then again, try chess, its cheeper, and I heard people have been playing it almost as long as stracraft...

This system shock sounds good... Can you get it for Mac? I had to play Sins on my hideous old PC

Yeah, bothers the hell out of me. It's their choice, but for me, the story is really important to my experience of a game. The best games have brilliant stories, but I wouldn't skip the story of any game, I'd just prefer to give the game an exra few minutes so I can get some context of why I'm doing this or that. That's why Gears of War and Halo and those sorts of games could only ever be distractions untill the MGSs, Final Fantasies and Mass Effects make it all worth while. Alas, my friends disagree, they just want to shoot people in the face... which under normal circumstances would be a laudable desire, but just seems wrong when gaming... or maybe I'm just messed up.

[QUOTE="texasgoldrush"] The reason why FFVII is labeled overrated, maybe more than any other game outside of Halo and Call of Duty, is because of the people that like the game and call it the greatest game ever made. The fans of the game are partly responsible for the backlash. Even one of my fave games of all time, LoZ Ocarina of Time, can be overrated. Calling OOT a masterpiece and an excellent game is not overrating it, but calling it the greatest game ever made is. The label "overrated" happens when a work gets too much hype and credit than it should have gotten. Even works that are great can carry this label. The label attempts to balance the power of opinion. Same thing with "Underrated". When something that should have got more credit and success, the label balances the opinion. Okami is basically known for how underrated it is. No one with a straight face can call FFVII "underrated", not with the hype and the success that game has. These labels do not go against the power of opinion, they balance it.texasgoldrush

FFVII is underrated. It's also overrated. Many people call FFVII the greatest JRPG of all time. Many others call it the worst JRPG they've ever played.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Like I have said, its too popular to even be considered "underrated", but you are correct that the truth lies in the middle. Thats why it is considered "overrated" by many gamers. The divisive nature of the game does hurt its legacy.

Boy, that was a long conversation to come to the conclusion 'fanboys aren't always right, sometimes they lose perspective' =)

If he wrote 10, he is a genius, if he wrote 12, he is a lazy moron. If he wrote both, what the hell happened?

Before anyone says it, I know JRPG's have many problems. I just prefer the artistic style they choose, and I'm naturally sort of against the americanisation of art.

For me it's Squaresoft. I resent the attitude of western reviewers that adding guns and gore to a game make it better. I don't think so.

I like mass effect, but i think the gameplay was broken, the shooting was poor and the leveling up was shallow.

Plus I prefer characters who look cool and distinctive (or like girls if you think so), rather than gruff morons with overturned puddingbowls for necks. Its just the extention of the values of hollywood into gaming. No Thankyou...
