I may be late to the party, but I'll give you a few less common suggestions, simply because they fit your criteria well and, like you, I'm always watching for RPGs "like Secret of Mana".

White Knight Chronicles [PS3/PSNow] *involves an action gauge but otherwise real-time, maps and party like SoM, custom character, sequel includes remastered original on-disc

Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll [PS3/PSNow] *3-character team, lots of environmental interaction

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning [PS3/XB360/PC] *often quests involve AI partners, combat and maps like SoM

Lord of the Rings: War in the North [PS3/XB360/PC] *3-character team, fast-paced combat, eagle assist

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen [PS3/XB360/PC] *custom characters, recently released on Steam, highly recommended

Ys: Memories of Celceta [PSVita] *basically a perfect equivalent to SoM in every way

Rune Factory 4 [3DS] *allows AI partners for questing, very similar aesthetic to SoM

And hey, there's a mix of both Japanese and Western titles in there. Look into all of them. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Also, when we're talking real-time combat, I assume you mean seamless encounters that occur on the field, and that's not usually the case with Tales games. Even with the newest ones, there are still menu-driven elements too, and I don't know if that will satisfy what you're looking for.

In the current generation, I would highly recommend the following games, in no particular order:

01) Resonance of Fate [PS3/XB360]

02) White Knight Chronicles II [PS3, includes enhanced edition of WKCI]

03) Yakuza 4 [PS3, open-world action RPG]

04) Persona 3 Portable [PSP]

05) Radiant Historia [DS]

06) Xenoblade Chronicles [WII]

07) Folklore [PS3]

08) Demon's Souls [PS3] or Dark Souls [PS3/XB360, PC coming in August]

09) Valkyria Chronicles [PS3, tactical RPG]

10) 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors [DS, M-rated visual novel with puzzles]

11) Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey [DS]

12) Nier [PS3/XB360]

And when you 100% all of those, I've got plenty more where that came from. Now, please go sign the Yakuza petition at...

New on Change.org, we have started an effort that will benefit both SEGA of America and its fans. Please support SEGA and the Yakuza franchise by petitioning for desired digital content and localization. Signing only takes 30 seconds, "none" or "anonymous" may be used in street address fields, and there are absolutely no drawbacks to the campaign. It's good for everyone, whether you're a Yakuza fan or not!

https://www.change.org/petitions/seg...uza-in-america

In the spirit of "Operation Rainfall" and "Dark Souls for PC", we want the bosses at SEGA of America to know that the gamers are paying attention, and if they listen to what the gamers really want, we will gladly line their pockets with our hard-earned cash!

This petition is designed to forward SEGA's agenda for digital distribution while also appealing to long-term desire for certain localization projects.

With the recent release of Dark Souls, I have started pondering one question - What are some of the greatest hardcore role-playing games of all time? Here are a few of the ones I have played, some recent and some classic: 01 - Demon's Souls [PS3, 2009] 02 - Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne [PS2, 2004] 03 - Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land [PS2, 2001] 04 - The Dark Spire [DS, 2009] 05 - King's Field III [PS, 1996 - released in North America as King's Field II] 06 - Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard [DS, 2008] 07 - The Witcher: Enhanced Edition [PC, 2008] 08 - Kagero: Deception 2 [PS, 1998] 09 - Shadow Tower [PS, 1999] 10 - Two Worlds II [PC/MAC/XB360/PS3, 2011] There are also two games on the horizon with serious hardcore potential, namely Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Dragon's Dogma. I'd like to hear which hardcore RPGs the rest of you like, as I am sure there are plenty of you who would name classics like Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle, Virtual Hydlide, or Might & Magic. I don't have much personal history with those games, but I'd love to know if there were any great titles that I have missed along the way.

Jak & Daxter seem to be popular guys... Well, with Sony's first party involvement in HD collections, your wishes for a Jak collection may be the most likely to actually happen.

Good call on Suikoden and Shadow Hearts. I would definitely snap up both.

With the recent trend of releasing HD versions of PS2 titles in Blu-Ray collections, I have started considering some of the potential that's still being left on the table. I'd like to hear everyone's opinions on desired HD collections. I'll get the ball rolling with a couple suggestions and why I think they would be important: 1) Shin Megami Tensei HD Collection - Atlus can seem to do no wrong. Even when they release a remake or update of a game, they include boat-loads of extra content. Persona 3 Portable was the 3rd version of that game, and it nearly doubled its original's content. The PSP remakes of Persona 1&2 are equally impressive in their enhancements. But if Atlus were to release an HD collection stemming from its PS2 properties, I think I would like to see the following: Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne, Persona 4, and Digital Devil Saga (Chapters I&II). Persona 3 stands well enough on its own and has had several versions already. It might be cool to see Devil Summoner I&II included, but they are definitely the lesser of the PS2 properties. Nocturne, P4, and DDSI&II would make the best grouping, as all of them represent different aspects of the SMT series. If Atlus were to give each the usual treatment, it could be even sweeter, adding content like a female demifiend option in Nocturne, with an adult Akihiko replacing the Dante/Raidoh cameo role; a female Main Character option for Persona 4 to mirror Atlus' additions in P3P; and a slight reworking of Digital Devil Saga to flow as a single game with new story elements and sidequests to supplement the already stellar gameplay. 2) Final Fantasy X Complete - With the release of FFXIII-2 on the horizon, I believe Square Enix would benefit from revisting their only other direct sequel (calm yourselves, FFVII fans, I know that the Compilation might technically count, but you know what I'm talking about here). If Square Enix wanted to release anything in an HD collection, a collection of X, Eternal Calm, and X-2 on one disc would be the only logical choice. Assuming that they would draw from PS2 properties, it wouldn't make any sense to include Final Fantasy XI Online (which as good as it was should never have been numbered, as if XIV wasn't enough to prove that point). And without XI, it would be silly to put X and XII in a collection together. North America never received access to the Eternal Calm content, and many view X-2 as the direction development should have taken instead of the real-time combat of XII and paradigm setup of XIII. This would be a great time to re-visit X as the greatest chapter of the series since VII and VIII. I certainly have my issues with X itself, but coupled with X-2's vast content and open-world mechanics, it still shines as an example of how to properly construct an RPG, even by 7th Gen standards.
