Movie Review: An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary presented by Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim. It is concerned with Global Warming and a bit about Al Gore`s efforts to expose the threat of Global Warming to the public. The film consists mostly of footage from Al Gore`s presentation called "The Slideshow" which he has presented in many places around the world.

In a technical sense the film seemed very good. Some good camera work and footage presents itself. Of course, as this is a documentary you will probably pay little to no attention to these aspects of the movie.

The music is very nice. It even won the "Best original song" Academy Award ( The first documentary to do so ). On this front, I really don`t have much to say. Once again, as it is a documentary this won`t matter much.

The meat of any documentary however, is what it is presenting. And in this case it is Global Warming and also some mis-conceptions surrounding it. This is a very polarizing subject, and for some people it won`t help that Al Gore is presenting it, as for some reason many people seem to be very hateful towards Al Gore. Your enjoyment of this film will be determined somewhat by your opinions on Global Warming and Al Gore. Although the movie is made very well so I would think that an open minded...skeptic would still enjoy it even with it's subject matter.

The writing is well done, although some people might be turned off by the bad jokes during the presentation pieces. But bad jokes are right at home during presentations and I don't feel that they really detract from the content of the film at all.

So, if you are a liberal, and especially if you are a member of the Green Party you will enjoy this movie very much. But if you are a skeptic you might not be so into it, but it should at least get your brain juices flowing.

Anyway, that's all I have to say!

_______________

Well that's about it, I'm feeling less messed up and my dad says that I'm going to enroll in an online high school soon enough ( Japanese educational system is crap ).

My badly made poem

Yeah, it's a Halo inspired poem. I'm sure there are plenty of other ones, but I don't really care. This is my first shot at writing poems so I thought I should stick to something I know about :P

Anyway, gaze in wonder at it's badly made rhymes

The grunts they like raindrops fell,

As the master chief he paves the way.

Many an Elite and Brute he must slay,

As they usher forth from their alien hell.

The Banshees and Ghosts they are not meek,

They are as strong as steel and equally sleek.

But even as all that is great must fall,

The Warthog it comes and destroys them all.

And the Master Chief he rides this beast,

As without it he is slow.

But for the warthog this is just another feast,

This we all should know.

The Master Chief cannot be stopped,

Of that you can be sure.

He is the beacon of light for the human race,

To illuminate the darkest sewer

Anyway, there you have it. Any...suggestions or advice would be very helpful. I started with this

sort of pattern but somehow couldn't quite stick to it after those first 4 lines. Then it started sounding sort of badly writen and cliche

Also for some reason the formatting is kind of messed up. It is supposed to be divided into 4 line blocks but the first 3 are all fused together...

Movie Review: Munich

(Here is my review of Munich, I also left the introduction from the original post)

I watched Munich right after I watched Babel. Well actually that isn't true. I found a DVD of Spiderman 3 lying around which I had never watched so I thought I might as well watch that (As I had stopped watching it the first time around out of boredom) and the same thing happened this time too. This isn't just because it is a Spiderman movie, as I had watched the first two and I rather enjoyed them. Thus I have come to the conclusion that Spiderman 3 is inferior to the first two movies. I think I may struggle through it so that I can give you guys a review of something I don't like for a change.

Anyway, now that we have that out of the way, let us read the review of Munich shall we?

Movie Review: Munich

Munich was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth. Surprisingly it was actually not quite as well received as you might think (considering that it is a Spielberg directed film) Many critics disliked the movie and also pointed out it's historical inaccuracies. Spielberg has noted that the first half of the movie depicting the Munich Massacre is accurate, while the second half is more like historical fiction. The second half is however based on the real Israeli operation known as "Operation Wrath of God". So you won't want to be using this film to brush up on your modern European history that's for sure.

The movie revolves around the Munich massacre. Actually to be more precise it revolves around the Israeli government's operations to assassinate top members of the terrorist organization Black September who orchestrated the Munich massacre. The main character, Avner, is an "Un-associated" member of the Mossad, Israel's equivalent to the CIA. He and a team assembled for him by the Mossad set out to find and kill 11 targets, all of them said to be high ranking members of Black September.

First off let us start with the acting, which is very good. Especially that of the main character Avner, portrayed by actor Eric Bana. The character is going through a lot, and this shows through in the actor's performance. Also in the film is Daniel Craig (Who played James Bond in Casino Royale).

Technical aspects of the film are also good, and there is really not much else to say.

Music is very good, capturing the feeling well. Such is to be expected from a Spielberg movie.

Dialogue is good in my opinion, sounding quite believable and realistic. Especially conversations involving Carl, who was my favorite character somehow.

Anyway, I don't have much more to say. Although it didn't get the best response from critics when it was released, I still think it is a very good movie that certainly should not be missed!

Custom Robo game review up, and new emblem

Well, I posted my Custom Robo review from my other blog up here. Hope you guys like it, as there don't seem to be that many good reviews for this horrific game. Also, finally got around to adding some games I have to my collection here on the website, which got me that nice looking PC gamer emblem.

I feel dizzy

After watching about half of final fantasy advent children in a dark room before going to school, I feel mildly dizzy. Not enough to make me worry too much, but enough to make me stop watching the movie for now and take a nap.

Welllll....that is pretty much all I have to say.

Book Review: Chapterhouse Dune

This was the first review I did on my other blog, I hope you enjoy it! It has only been a month since that day but I think my writing style when it comes to reviews has grown considerably. Nevertheless, I still think it is mildly presentable...so here it is!

Book Review: Chapterhouse Dune

I've just read Chapterhouse Dune. It is the last book in Frank Herbert's Dune series. Overall, although not as good as Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse Dune is a fantastic read. Obviously nobody likes spoilers, so I'll just give you a basic introduction and my opinions on the book.

The book starts off with the Bene Gesserit doing quite a lot of stuff. For one, they are raising a ghola Miles Teg, the military commander who dies at the end of Heretics of Dune. They are also keeping Scytale who is a Tleilaxu master inside a no-ship along with Idaho and Murbella the Honored Matre.

Murbella is being trained as an acolyte and is an important piece in Odrade's plan to save the Bene Gesserit from the Honored Matres. Her role in the book slowly grows bigger and bigger, but I don't want to say more than that.

Just like in the previous book, the Honored Matres are hunting the Bene Gesserit planets down one by one. Odrade, the mother superior, sees their current situation in her prescient sense as her slowly walking on a thin rope above a canyon with an unknown axe wielder running towards the rope. Odrade makes an interesting character, although honestly I didn't think she is as compelling as some of the others in this novel

Sheeana is now a Reverend Mother and is overlooking the quickly expanding desert the Bene Gesserit have established on Chapterhouse. She had control over the sandworms in Heretics of Dune and there are references made to the possibility to leverage the power of her followers into something even more powerful

Lucilla survives the destruction of the Bene Gesserit planet Lampadas and ends up back on the planet Gammu. She meets "The Rabbi" who is the leader of the remnants of the Jewish religion. The Jews have been hiding for a very long time now, and many think the Jewish religion gone. But the Bene Gesserit with their other memories know otherwise, and use this knowledge as leverage for certain favors from this underground Jewish community. The Rabbi however must give Lucilla up to the Honored Matres or face the consequences. So he reveals Rebecca, a wild reverend mother. Rebecca shares with Lucilla, and Lucilla is sent to Junction, the Honored Matre home-base.

That's the basic intro to all that is happening in the book. As you can see, there is a lot of stuff happening at once, and that has always been one of the strong points of the Dune series in my opinion. The characters in the book are very detailed and deep for the most part. And the book is filled with quite a lot of action, keeping you wanting to read more and more until the last page has been finished.

One of the bad points to the book though, is that it is such an immense cliffhanger. This is remedied by the books written by Frank Herbert's son, which continue the story based on notes that Frank Herbert himself wrote, outlining where he was going with the Dune series. However these books have gotten mixed reviews, and obviously have a much different feel than the original six Dune books.

It is however inferior to Heretics of Dune in my opinion. Heretics was just so psychological and intricate, and the story more interesting than that of Chapterhouse. I would not say however, that Frank Herbert lost his touch in this book, because I don't think that is the case. He simply pulled off Heretics of Dune slightly better than Chapterhouse, and that should not make you any less inclined to read this one. Chapterhouse Dune is a fantastic book, and it is a must read for science fiction fans. The great characters, the epic story, and the overall feel of the book makes it an experience to truly relish!

And now a random famous quote!

Note: Sorry about the weird effect in the spacing between words around the pic, I just copy pasted it from my other blog so it is a bit funky

Book Review: A Confederacy of Dunces

Note: This was made for my other blog, which I am now abondoning in favor of the gamespot blog system. I'm going to be moving over my reviews and such from that site to this one.

I've just recently finished reading A Confederacy of Dunces, a fantastic book written by John Kennedy Toole. It is unfortunate that John Kennedy Toole killed himself far before his book was even published, and is even sadder when you consider all of the fantastic literature he could have written if he were still alive.

So without further ado, let the review commence.

Book Review: A Confederacy of Dunces

The book starts with the main character Ignatius standing outside waiting for his mother. He is a portly fellow with a green cap, and looks rather suspicious to officer Mancuso, who will be a rather important character in the book. Ignatius gets in a big argument with the officer, but Mancuso instead arrests an old man in the crowd surrounding the two who kept going on about communists.

Ignatius then sets out with his mother to the Night of Joy bar where they annoy the people there and eventually just leave. Ignatius' mother, who is intoxicated, starts driving the car only to crash into a building, doing quite severe damage to the structure.

This is how the story gets going, obviously I don't want to describe too much about the book as that would spoil it, but I think you get an idea of what the book is like from the beginning.

The story is very well written, and has quite a few characters in it. All of these characters are interesting and the dialogue is so well written that you can really get attached to them.

Ignatius is a genius, but he is also slothful and is constantly complaining about his "Valve". The story sees him trying to find jobs so that he can pay off the debt that their family owes, as well as trying to beat Mirna Minkoff, another intellectual who's ideals Ignatius is fascinated with yet at the same time offended by, in debates via letters. He is a very complex interesting character, who even though un-likable at first you may actually grow to sympathize with him.

The story is set in New Orleans and has many references to actual places that exist or existed and even has "Dr.Nut" a soda that existed when the book was being written. Ignatius and the author also have some things in common, such as their places of employment.

This was a fantastic read, I hope everyone picks up this book and reads it all the way to the end. A Confederacy of Dunces is not something to be missed!

Books aren't really the thing you give stars or ratings, so I'll just leave you to read the review and judge for yourself!

I really do urge you to pick up A Confederacy of Dunces if you haven't already read it. It is a fantastic book that really does deserve the Pullitzer prize that it won.

And now...random picture!
