IMO Playing Half-Life 1 before HL2 would make HL2 a little more fun mainly because of nostalgia. Other than that, you could play HL2 just fine and not be lost. Other than that, you could play HL1 just as like it were a prequel. You can't go wrong either way. ;)

I don't support piracy, but the harm it causes to the developers really is small..STAR_Admiral
...which is only speculation. It actually cuts deeply into their income.
