So i've got an 80GB PS3 which is around 4 years old. Never ever experienced any issues with it ( except some very rare freeze issues every now and then ) but after 4.41 update, I've been having a strange problem.
- 2 to 3 days after installing the update, I turned on my PS3 to play some Bioshock Infinite. But on booting up my PS3, it froze right after the main screen, after choosing which user to log in as (ie, while loading up the XMB). I had to force shut down and restart. The system prompted me saying that some files may be corrupt - does a file check successfully - boot up the PS3 again and the same issue pops up.
- Did a 'Restore Default Settings' from Safe mode. It worked fine for a while after that. But after 2 days, again, freeze on selecting user after booting up.
- Did a 'Restore Database' . After this, the system worked fine with no issues for 2-3 ish weeks. But today morning, again, the endless freeze at boot-file check loop popped up again during my boot ups.
Few Additional Points
- the freezes over the past month only seem to occur right after booting up. Haven't had a game freeze on me during play since 4.41. Also, over the past month, my PS3 got stuck on a black screen twice quitting a game.
- my hard drive has quite a substantial amount of free space. I've heard of issues which occur due to nearly full HDD's - this is definately not the case here.
- NEVER experienced any frequent freezing issues like this prior to 4.41.Â
- PS3 is well ventilated and I have been taking extremely good care of it for 4 years. Don't think dust is the issue.
- NOT an overheating issue. And system isn't making any weird loud sounds. Runs quietly.
- NOT tried a system restore yet.
Questions
- did 4.41 mess up my PS3 for good?Â
- is it my hard drive that's failing on me? If so, why would it show signs of failure all of a sudden one fine day ( coincidentally after a system update ) , inspite of working perfectly well for the past 4 years?Â
- is it due to corrupted files ? If so, isn't it the job of the PS3 file check to remove corrupted files ?
Any help would do. :) :)Â
