I was having a discussion with my dad last night. I was applying for this Engineering Program at the college in my town and they asked me to write a 100 word essay on why I wanted to apply. I love web design, so I put that down. But I also wanted to learn how to make games, so I put that down too. My dad was saying that if I was going to write that I wanted a career in games, I should put that I wanted to make "educational games" (still don't know what that means. Elmo's ABC's comes to mind... ) So I told him that the point of video gaming is to entertain. He retorted saying that they would think of another horny teenager trying to create a GTA-like game. I replied with "What about a game like Zelda or Mario?" And he said that no one has heard of those games! At least he hadn't until I had told him! This really disturbed me! Is this what everyone thinks of gamers? That just because GTA is in the news because of it's... it's... (I don't know) disgusting-ness, that other games like the famed Mario, for instance, don't exist, or don't matter?! Please tell me it ain't true!
NOTE: I orginally put this in the GC forum, but then I realised I should probably put it in my blog! :)
