The end of the course!

I finished the first level of the game design course a couple of weeks ago. I have high hopes for a Distinction as I have been told the work I have handed in is very good but I will not know the final grade for a few more weeks. The certificate should be coming through the post during the middle of August, so I was told!

Time flies when you are having fun, I had not realised I had not updated this since Christmas so here is a quick breakdown of what was done on the course:-

Game Reviews (New and Retro games ended up as two seperate assignments)

Photoshop Skills

Concept Art

Create a 2D Game

Create a Flash Movie for a game introduction

Animation Techniques

Genre

Video Review

Sound Effects

That's everything I can remember right now! My favourite out of the list above was easily the concept art as we were given a brief for a imaginary game that was going to be created and we had to create characters to suit the theme and game. It was great fun creating the characters and then doing nice shiny versions in Photoshop for the final version.

My least favourite was genre, not because it was tough, anyone could work out that a medieval theme would have knights etc.....it was the presentation infront of the group I had to do at the end, just because I'm quite shy and did not enjoy having the whole group watching me at the front of the room and the teacher at the back of it, making notes, doing his Simon Cowell impression!

In conclusion, now that the first level is finished I can say that I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next two years for the higher level. I learnt how to use Photoshop and Adobe Flash somewhat and, as supposed industry standards, it can only be a good thing to get some practice in early!

I'll try to update more often when the next course starts, any questions about it, feel free to post a comment below! :)

Idiot Fanboys!

I just need to get this off my chest.

I was talking to a fellow student on my Games Design Course. The task was to discuss our favourite games. I write down some of my all time favourites like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, Guardian Heroes etc.

He takes one look at the list and goes, "You like old games."

My reply="So what?"

His utterly fantastic response="Old games are sh!t."

He then takes a look at a game I listed, Power Stone 2 for the Dreamcast.

"Dreamcast is sh!t."

"Why?"

"It's old technology."

WHAT A FREAKIN' IDIOT! It doesn't matter when a game comes out, a good game is a good game! He is ignorant and blinded by his sheer belief that Playstation 3 is 'The greatest thing ever'.

I have nothing against any console, game, whatever. I think all the consoles have great games. He listed PS3 games and I thought "Good for him."

Another example of his ignorance is that he says "360 is sh!t. Microsoft are evil because they bought GTA IV's downloadable content exclusively...360 has no more exclusives compared to PS3.....Nintendo Wii has sh!t games...." Blah, blah, blah!

You would think sh!t is the only word he knows, right? Well I had a whole week of his excruciating bias! To top it all off, he said to me he liked Street Fighter 2 today.

Me="I thought you didn't like old games."

Him="You talk sh!t. I said I didn't like old technology."

You couldn't make it up if you tried! Add liar and hypocrite to the list! Says one thing, does the other and can't even process his own mental thoughts properly!

Sorry for the rant but I feel much better now! Anyone else had any dealing with REAL-LIFE fanboys? Not just the internet geeks that this guy is always talking about too?

"I had a real laugh flaming 360 fanboys on a games message board yesterday. What idiots." This is another quote of his.

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

First Blog Post! Welcome!

Hello everyone!

I am TheVGDude and I have played computer games all my life! So we should all have at least one thing in common!:D

What inspired me to make this first post is a change in personal circumstances. Recently I have been accepted on to a college course for Games Design. Due to awful maths I didn't make they higher level of the course and am starting right at the bottom, but we'll gloss over that!

My idea for this blog is to inform you what happens on the course, to help you decide if you are interested about learning how to make games! There will probably be other random stuff too like reviews whenever I have the time between this course and work so keep checking back!

I started the course in early September and things have only just begun to take shape in the form of a actual timetable a couple of weeks ago.....that can be a blog post all on its own!

So far on this course we do modules on Games Reviewing, Animation and Image Editing. What I am most looking forward to, actually making the game, will probably be saved to last knowing my luck!

That's enough for one post.....happy gaming!
