I have the game on both the Xbox360 and the PS3. I played it side by side on two 52inch HDTVs of the exact same model. And first of all I will deny the fact that the ps3 has a shorter draw distance because I tested it and it's simply not true. It has more jaggies because the PS3's videocard can't do AA and HDR at the same time and the devs went for the HDR. It is possible to do a pseudo HDR with the CELL processor and leave the AA to the RSX, but who would work that hard for a multiplatform game(KillZone 2 and heavenly sword use this)? At some point, the textures looked better on the PS3 but I guess it depends on the ligthing in the game. On the positive side, the pipboy loads faster on the PS3, and scrolling through items is also faster on the PS3 because of the HDD. Sometimes, the characters have a cellshaded look on PS3.
I will criticize the engine used for this game : Gamebryo. This engine does PC, Xbox360 and PS3, but it is much more optimized for the PC and XBOX360. And it's also dated and the reason why it looks as s**t. My theory is that they took the Oblivion game as a template and put a fresh coat of paint on it with mods like the VATS, etc. Why couldn't they make it on Unreal engine(more optimized for PS3 than Gamebryo)? The game would have looked much better on both consoles. The reson, I belive is because Gamebryo costs about 150,000$ and Unreal costs twice as much or even more. Gamebryo is simply not a good engine for making PS3 games.
Also, maybe some people don't know it but creating the content and programming scripts for quests in the game is done only once for both platforms because the engine will compile the game for XBOX360, PS3 and PC with minimal changes to controls, graphics optimization and the game's options(like installation on an HDD). In this case, the AA not present in the PS3 version. The game is only "PORTED" when you make it on a different engine than when the game was released the first time. In this case, both were developped at the same time, only the engine was optimized for the Xbox and not for the PS3 because I believe it is tougher to achieve certain things on the PS3. The conclusion of this is that the bugs related to the quests' advancement are likely to appear in the PC and Xbox versions too if the master disks that go to the disk factory were built at the same time(same version of the game). If however the version number for the PC and Xbox is higher, then the PS3 owners got an older built and this is the reason for the bugs.
Yeah I guess Bethesda screwed up for the PS3 version because they didn't polish it enough by tweaking the engine's graphics. For me it doesn't matter, I bought the PS3 version for the Collector's Edition because I like the controller better and it doesn't have securom. I've been playing for 8 hours and it never freezed and I never got any graphical glitch. So I guess I'm lucky.
