Oh, Dear God, No.

With the upcoming rape known as Dragonball: Evolution upon us, I have been searching the Internet Movie Database for some movies I'm looking forward to in the future. I have discovered something that sinks my hopes.

The cast of The Last Airbender.

In case you're without an inner child and don't watch cartoons, the movie is based upon Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, a big hit amongst kids and older audiences (seriously, it's the only good they've had in years). The live-action movie (*shudder*) is being made by M. Night Shyamalan. Considering M. Night's history, this means the movie could go good or bad; with him, it's a hit-or-miss, as demonstrated by The Sixth Sense and The Happening as his high and low points.

The cast consists mostly of unknowns, and it's certainly not impossible for unknown actors to become big names over one movie or TV show (I reference The Chronicles of Narnia and The 4400). But for anyone who has seen the television show and knows the first season's main antagonist and one of the show's most important (and my personal favorite) characters, Prince Zuko, you'll know why I am concerned: He's being played by Jesse ****ing McCartney.

Zuko from the show:

(Note: this is season 3; in season 1, he's mostly bald with a ponytail)

This is Jesse ****ing McCartney:

For those of you who haven't seen the show, I know what you're thinking: So what? A Disney pop star/actor is playing a live-action version of a kids' show from Nick. No big deal, right?

Wrong. In the show, Zuko goes through emotional turmoil with his family, changing from bad guy to good guy to bad guy to good guy. Zuko's character development is more profound than any other in the show. McCartney's characters typically have no character aside from the fake crap we see on Disney today.

Could he pull off the look? Perhaps. But that's not what concerns me. What concerns me is the attitude. As far as I'm concerned, his high point was when he voiced the character Roxas in Kingdom Hearts 2, a kids' game. He sings crappy songs on the Disney channel, right next to Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers. I swear, if he turns Zuko into some Disney sing-along character. . .

As for the main protagonist, all I know is he's a Texan martial artist named Noah Ringer. I'd supply a picture of this Ringer person, if only such an elusive picture could actually be found. All I know is, he'd better be a bald 12-year-old with an arrow on his head, because that's what he needs to look like.

But wait! It gets worse!

In addition to a pop singer, another part of the cast, a semi-unknown, named Jackson Rathbone will be playing one of the supporting characters.

Rathbone was a character in the piss-poor Twilight movie.

The girl playing his sister, Nicola Peltz, was an unimportant character in Deck the Halls, a bad Christmas comedy.

So yeah, I'm sweating a bit. What Dragonball is to a lot of people, Airbender was to me; I loved that show, even though it's fairly recent (it began in 2001, ended last year). Will Hollywood whip out the chloroform and the condoms with this one, or will Shyamalan do a good job? All I know is, the show's creators are impressed with Shymamalamabam's ideas, so perhaps there is a glimmer of hope. . .

I also looked up the Death Note movie. No news on that yet. I will cry if Zac Efron is Light Yagami. Seriously.
