A Trip On The Memory Lane

The phone rang, my father picked it up and told me it was for me. "Dude, how do I open the pink doors in Super Metroid?" my friend said on the phone. I told him what he needed to do in order to overcome that obstacle. This scenario is highly unlikely to happen nowadays due to the fact that the digital age is slowly taking over for better, or for worse.

Back in the days of NES, SNES, N64, PS1, Genesis, most of its games had no sense of direction or a tutorial that would guide you somewhat. Remember Megaman X? The second you would press Start on the main menu, you would immediately spawn on the first/intro level of the game. Sometimes without a cutscene. It was fairly easy to get stuck on that intro level since you had to figure it out that there is actually a maneuvercalled "walljumping". After that, then you had to figure it out how to do it on the controller. Usually, most people would discover such things by accident.

Megaman X is a perfect example to compare the mentality of past developers to current ones. If you have been gaming a lot, you can probably tell what developers/programmers were trying to do when playing a video game by observing the game mechanics.

I'm gonna continue this article later, need some rest for now.
