Amatuer Review : Super Mario Bros Wii

Nostalgia with a touch of new.

When Super Mario Galaxies came out a Reviewer once said that "Anything after this would be a step back", And it has with Super Mario Brothers Wii. However it is a step back to solid grounds inorder to present a game that will appeal to old Mario plattformer fans, new Mario fans ranging from both children to adults.

The plot should be pretty easy to guess to anyone who's played several Mario games where he isn't driving or trying to defeat Sonic The Hedgehog in the Olympics.
On Princess Peachs birthday, Bower and his dastardly children kidnapps her in the middle of the festivity, once again forcing Mario and Luigi to go on a quest to save her.

Super Mario Brothers Wii does add something new to what is a old recipe, mainly Multiplayer. You can at the same time play with three of your friends, for better or worse.
As far as Gameplay goes it is pretty straight forward in therms that you need to "cooperate" with your friends, or if you go choose to just go alone, to go from Point A to B and survive any obstacles between them. After defeating all the levels in one world and the bosses, you progress to a new world and one more step closer to reach Princess Peach.
Super Mario Bros Wii also decided to mixing up the better of the old games, Such as Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and even the Original Super Mario game.

Cooperation is the key to defeat the game and still have most of your friends.

As far as the Multiplayer goes it does add a little more fun but it's also a double edges sword, it is now you and your friends reveal their true colors. I had the fortune of playing with a friend who's sense of teamplay was to leave me behind as he raced to the finish, causing me to "die" and thus having me reach the benchmark of 24 continues, while my teamplay was to ruin anything he tried to do, both accidentaly and deliberatly such as use him as a trampoline when he was over a gap to ensure I managed to make it to the next solid ground. There are also times when you or your friend has to control plattforms inorder to progress, allowing you or your friend to be testing your friendship to the breaking point. The game was considerably harder because of this rather then when I played it solo. You may loose friends with this game, you have been warned.

But we all know most will throw cooperation out the window as soon as the game starts.

In the Graphics department the game looks great and somewhat cartoony, Each world has it's own environment which is reflected in the levels. Vivid colors make the entire thing a pleasant thing to behold. A very typical Mario game feature.
Even the Audio is very good however I do miss more variety in tunes, you will often hear the same tune in several levels in the same world. Additionally you will also hear very recognizeable, remixed tunes if you've played the Nintendo and Super Nintendo games, bring upon an additional sense of nostalgia.

But every game has it's flaws and this game is no exception.

The most Irritating flaw, and about the only one I could actually find, is that sometimes when a friend "dies" in the game, the screen or rather the game will do a brief skip/lag which can mess up a jump and result in more friends "dying" when they land on something they was aiming to avoid or just alltogether fall into lava or from large heights. While it doesn't happen all the time, it is frustrating when it does.

Cooperation?, Who needs it?

Super Mario Bros Wii is in all aspects a solid fun game, and while the multiplayer enhances the fun had when playing it also increases it's difficulty depending on who's playing and how good they are at the game. It doesn't bring the game down however but rather it keeps you a little on edge. The game appeals to gamers of all ages and even those that don't normally touch games.
If there's one game released this year that you should grace your Wii with then Super Mario Bros Wii is will not let you down with it's nostalgic Plattformer game with a touch of new and abillity to rob you off your friends. But hey, You can always make new friends.

Ending Score: 8.8./10.

Aww fiddlesticks..

So a friend of mine just came back from a trip to Japan, where he, by my request, bought Yakuza 3 for me.
Now I suspected that since the previous Yakuza games had english subtitles, that this one would too.

If it does then my hour of starring at the option screen with my dictonary hasn't given results.

In addition the entire screen turns black and white when I start the game, leading me to believe there is either something wrong with the TV, Which I find unlikely since the colors are back when I exit the game. Or my 40GB PS3 is having difficulty handling it in comparison to my friend 60GB.

So now I'm stuck trying to fix the color in the game and figure out if learning Japanese will take less time then Sega releasing a DLC which included English subtitles in the game as a online petition wants.

Finally to search may come to an end

After having gotten my hands on Resident Evil 2 and 3, I've longed to get Resident Evil 1.

That desire has been with me for several years now and just today did I discover a guy here in Scandinavia that sold it, While it'll cost me probably 50 bucks in total for having the game shipped over here, I don't care as the prospect of finally having Resident Evil 1 in my grasp is a very nice thought.

Amatuer Review- Shellshock 2 : Blood Trails

I pretty much have a open mind and I enjoyed the Prequel, Shellshock: Nam`47, so when I got my hands on Shellshock 2 : Blood trails I started the game with a smile on my lips.
Which turned upside down and back again as if a rollercoaster ride.

The Plot is set in Vietnam, 1969, and I start in a Hospital or apartment complex that well worn out by the marks of war. A officer guides me around in the building and in the many rooms I see War-tired soldiers grying in a corner, other are laying down down on the floor exhausted and only get up to hurl out their morning rations over my fine polished boots as I walk past them. behind closed doors I hear baby screams, crying moms and dogs whining. It's quite before the storm.
The developers seems to be diving a multicolored image of the war where it's not just run-and-gun but also psycological factors in works. And it soon shows that you, the main characters is a nerve-wreck himself. He pants and gasps as if he's hyperventilating as we move down the hallways, which in the long run i suspected could get a little irritating.

The story is pretty thin to begin with but I soon understood that the main character has a brother in the war who was sent to Cambodia to retrive something called "Whiteknight", his brother has apparantly gotten some kind of virus that make him aggressive and infectious, very much like the "zombies" in the 28 Days later movie, and for some reason you are able to see his actions through dreams.
You are then sent by orders from the brass to try to stop the infection your brother has caused and to find your brother.

Vietnam is a country known for it's comfortable Hotels and great staff

The gameplay can be pretty repetitive, you either hold your ground against the Vietcong or infected Vietnamese population, or you walk around alone in the jungle, caves and even in a mansion.
While you are running around in the jungle you have to watch out for booby-traps where you need to bush a series of buttons to survive it, surprisingly enough this feature is one of the best functioning features in the game as it causes the most nerwrecking tension, the second one is actually when you walk around in vietcong tunnels or the mentioned mansion with only your flashlight being your lightsource and if the developers had focused more on this then the game could've been much more fightening to play.
Instead it gets tossed in between certain chapters and serves as breaks from the loose Run-and-Gunning, which I though the developers tried to portray differently in the beginning of the game.
To fill in the story, when you load a new chapter you can read a draft from the main characters diary, this maybe to give the game a more nuanced story but the text just shows how thin the story really is.

A large irritation moment is that the AI sucks, When you get soldiers to help you then they're about as helpful as a toothpick in a gunfight. They rarely shoot at the enemies and drop like flies, leaving you against a ocean of enemies.
Now in that situation a grenade is great to have, where the blast will send the enemies flying and leave you unscatered. In Shellshock 2 you'll have more luck throwing pebbels, The blast rarely kills anyone, Yours truely threw two grenades at an infected and she didn't even stagger even after they had blown up beltween her legs. I assume the brass had to cut back on the explosives and filled some grenades up with firecracker powder thanks to the hippies protesting back in the US at that time.

And the Locals are always willing to sell you souvernirs

Graphically, it's not really something to brag about. With exceptions, the majority of the game's visiuals don't really offer much atmosphere. If you've seen one jungle then you've seen every outdoor level in the game.
Additionally the animations also tend to be beyond bad at certain points. I encoutered a "zombie" somewhere that came bursting out in a terrifying way from a hole, but then he walked back inside and then out again. he repeated this for about five times before i bothered to blow his ugly infected face off.

So come on down to Vietnam Soldier, we're waiting for you!

Shellshock 2 doesn't come with any shocking inovations ( Hehe, wordplay). The mixture of Vietcong and Zombies sound like the recipie for a poorly B-horror movie combined with a war movie, and Honestly that's what Shellshock 2 : Blood trails lives to be. And I honestly find it a little sad because at times I could see and imagine that this came could be of grand proportions but it reaches halfways up the hill and struggles to stay there.

However, When I sat down afterwards and decided to acknowledge it as a B-movie game, It was cheesy, frustrating but also a little bit fun.
It grew on me like when I saw Braindead for a second time, or maybe I'm suffering from some kind of infection now.
If you have a open mind and have a extreme love for First person shooters, zombies, the Vietnam war and cheesy B-movies then you'll find this game entertaining, others..well..Get it when it ends up in the bargain bin.

Pros

- At times very creepy.
- Fun to sneak around in dark caves and hallways with a flashlight
- Good button sequences.

Cons

- Thin story
- Below mediocre AI
- Useless Weaponry

Score : 4.8/10

Friday the 13th, A day of bad luck?

Friday the 13th goes together with being a day of misfortune like peanut butter and jelly, but then you have those that don't want jelly with their peanut butter. People like me, I've never understood that combination. Peanut butter is well enough without you adding redness to it, looks like someone with hemoroids left me a "Good morning" for breakfast.

Anyways I woke up early by the sound of my cell phone ringing, it was a friend and he wanted to go downtown with me, and get your filthy mind out of the gutter now. I figured that since I was on the prowl for two games that I knew came out now I accepted his 8 o'clock in the morning request and we were on our way.

Now I've heard a whole heap of things about Gamestop, I've heard they are horrible, rude, irritating, worships Satan and that Lindsay Lohan lives in the backroom eating babies and valium but I wonder if that's an American phenomenom. Upon arrival at my local Gamestop store they had more or less just opened up, with pride and confidence of being in my right element I walked up to the clerk and asked if they had F.E.A.R. 2 and Shellshock 2 in since it was their release date here in Norway. Then came the bombshell. I was the first customer and because of that and that I was going to purchase F.E.A.R. 2, I was given the Limited Edition and a 30% discount on the game and Shellshock 2, which sadly didn't have any special editions. Now this is pretty special for me, It's basically my first ever special edition game and also for the sequel of a game I've had tons of fun playing.

Friday the 13th, a day of misfortune?

I think not
