Naw its more i hope to keep it for at least 3years + not just for games also for mi uni cad software, but am debating the preformance increase vs the cost since ddr3 is more pricy again my initial budget was 1500 and i can get a q9550, 4gig ram, m/b, 4870x2, but since i want it for the longer period i was thinking in 2 years time games would start to support multi threading thus the quad will be useful and was tossing up buying an core i7 if the boost warrented the gain. or buying the low core i7 range now and buying a faster processor in 3 years time since most of the cad work i do is mathematical modelling ram and processor are the main requirements

Ey guys i looking at building a computer im stuck however on what CPU to get and thus the m/b according to what i pick
A 920 here is $50 more expensive than the q9550 and i hear it kicks it arse (Is it true???) however im stuck with what to do for m/b
The core i7's do they really need overclocking?, i can get a m/b for ~400 which isnt the best for o/c or around 550 which is gud for o/c is it necessary to overclock? or will it be in the near future. (Also stupid question if i say get a the $550 Asus m/b can i use it until they change the cpu socket type or will i need to change it if i go and buy a new processor in a year or twos time??)
Im looking at a ati 4870x2 so im tyring to aviod any bottle necks any suggestion im happy to ponder over so suggest ahead
Thanks in advance Trent
Ey guys
My hdd and cd drive jsut died due to my ps killing itself
Im planning on upgrading my system in 2-4 months time now anything i buy i want to carry over, basically what i want to know is it this hardware will work with the latest m/b's in 2-4 months time and if it will run on my current m/b. Im currently using ide on my m/b but it has sata and im a noob with it so im unsure if these will run
Current m/b is

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM 32MB SATA 3Gbs

(This i just want it to run even if it runs at 500gb 250gb 100gb atvm when i upgrade i should then be able to use the 1tb)
If there is something else you recommend or they wont run on my m/b, but on newwer ones just post it i may just have to buy some throw away junk in the interium then
Cheers Trent
I have a switch on my monitor now with that one im unsure best to check yourself if u have a laptop, or another computer just plug it up and give it a go. Or your display card should have 2 out, a vga, dvi plug both up like u are using dual monitors and try switching between them i know i can do it with mine so give it a go before u spend the $$ and c if it works
Cheers Trent
lol after reading this i dont no what to pick :(, i was looking myself at a E8600, but dunno now to get the E8400 and E8500,
what ever you do, do NOT buy the e8500, it is not any different from the e8400, except for $$$Predator123
Sorry to go abit off topic but a few in here seem to know what they talknig about what would be better to OC and to around what speed
Also in comparision to a Q9550 which i was looking at getting,
(Planning on keeping this system for 3-5 years

So I am looking for a good 22" monitor to use with xbox 360. I heard that it is better to connect it throught HDMI if the monitor supports it. I found out that HP w2207h would pretty good for that, but what I found frustrating about this monitor is that, even thought its resolution is 1680x1050, in some forums I read that people who connected their xbox 360 or PS3 to this monitor using HDMI, it automatically adjusts to 1080P and the picture quality is amazing. How can this be possible? if this monitor really supports true 1080P then I will most certanly buy it...
Legzdins
Make sure you do buy a 1080P monitor if you want 1080P, the quality is amazing even beter for blue ray. I have a 1080P Samsung 42" and its amazing. As far as i know if the monitor supports 1650x1080 it cannot** produce 1920x1080 (benchmark for true HD 1080P) since it doesnt have enough pixcels to actually display it. Its like having 1650 Tv's and 1920 parts of the image you cannot display them all at once generally so its skips maybe every 5th.
Simple answer is yes you can tell the 360 to put out 1080P, but the screen if its max res is 1650x1080 it wont display 1080P 1920x1080, but actually 1650x1080 (the 360 will say 1080P though). Tried it with my monitor 1650x1080 and campared to TV and there is a very noticable differanve in the sharpness due to this
Cheers Trent
EDIT** it adjusts automatically since the 360 assumes when you are using HDMI its a 1080P (1920x1080 res) its in the manual :)
i was having a read about the new I7 quads, for the power and price they seem to be a good buy, but when will they be out in AUS early next year some time???. What put me off was the rising prices, i would wait and get it but prices part prices may be higher, and theres no point buying now and storing till it arrives they change so much.
There is debate over wether the US going into recession will lower prices since people wont buy as many but it could go the other way they make less since they afraid of this and create a shortage so its a gamble lolz
you are right but for the cad software like solid works, it wont run in 2 years time not to mention on my laptop im running a low end core 2 extreme and it takes like 10-15 mins to plot a 100,000 point graph, this is a pain when i got to bug fix or edit the probgram waiting that interval of time, part of the reason why 1 got those 2 processors their are due to their number crunching architecture it takes less than 1 min to preform the calculations. BTW the laptp was $700 lolz only got it ummm 7 months ago
Edit* done some checking the e8400 for matlab coding about 2-3mins for graph to be produced not to bad actually :)
Edit#2 how long would i get out of a ???9600gt???? before i would have to upgrade it you rekon, if i have to change it in a year or 2's time might be worth paying the bit extra so i wont need to unsure here?
Ey guys and thanks in advance
Im normally a console gamer but for uni i need to change my computer it ancient btw
Now im not up to date with teh latest stuff its changed so much and i was planning on buying early next year but the prices are going up with the state of the world economy.
Now im looking around 1100-1500AUD for the tower i got the case already i thermaltake armour plus
Processor whats better
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600/ 3.33GHz/ 6MB Cache/ 1333FSB/ LGA775 ~$430
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550/ 2.83GHz/ 12MB Cache/ 1333FSB/ LGA775 ~$500
Now im going to be using it occasionally for number crunching like matlab and the occasional solid works etc It will mainly be used for GAMES so which will be better performance stock, and than overclocked with stock cooling read you can push the E8600 to 4GHz??
Videocards
Now im a little stuck here ive read all sorts of different things for GTX280, 260 9800X2, intially i was going to aim for 2x 9800gtc + but they have gone up by more than 150 each now. Im hoping to buy 1 now and buy a 2nd in a few months i want this rig to last me till uni is done, games i dont expect it to run on high mode in 2-3 years time but on normal
So whats better + good buy for money
512M 9800GTX+ / Asus ~$450 ---> DROPED $300
1GB GTX280 / Asus ~$650
1GB GTX260 / Asus ~$410
1GB 9800GX2 ~$465 (i wouldnt SLI the boost isnt worth the $$)
Now to make it last abit longer i would SLI the top 3 either one i got unless told otherwise
Motherboard NO CLUE WHATSO EVER depends on VC
Ram is fine
HDD fine
Power supply
What wattage is reconomened for this setup ive read 850-1200 and the PS vary up to $300
IDEALLY
$1100-1500 now Later ill buy a second GC
Want it to last remainder of uni, for the software i use no problems (everything above can)
games on medium in 1-2 years and low after that (i could be wrong with the setup above)
Thanks
