With the release of The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim media outlets were set ablaze with information on this apparent epic odyssey and information on the series once again flowing through the veins of the GameSpot community which lead me to an excellent week going back to a system before my time, MS-DOS and its affinity of nerve racking titles as I prepare myself for my own adventure in the treacherous lands of Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall are the titles and they were unforgiving to a modernized gamer such as myself, I was instantly greeted by Arena's blood-thirsty goblins and rats in a dank sewer with sword in hand and scattered treasures diverse for my plundering and several hours later of constant searching I came across the magic gate leading me to a town in my characters home provinance, clad in pieces of plate and leather armors and a tiny buckler strapped to my arm I was set out into a massive world of the scariest **** I've ever experienced and I'm never going back.
Being lost for hours in the halls of crypts and wildernesses of Morrowind I was mentally impared of direction and much homicidal rage later (and several innocents slain) I was on my way to the Hammerfell region in search of a dwarven fortress known as Fang Lair, gathering it's exact location was time consuming involving a run through an abandoned keep littered with homicidal skeletons and vicious wolves I managed to locate the parchment that soon after lead me to my destination and the collection of the first piece to the staff of chaos. I was pretty much finished with The Elder Scrolls: Arena and after a small break booted up Daggerfall, now this game was impressive for its generation. Actual three-dimensional rendered enviornments and a larger color pallette (along with better story pacing) I can honestly say that the initial awe of Arena did not occure here and I'm fairly unraptured by this new adventure.
In the grand scheme of my romp through DOS games I'm thankful for being born in '93, but the titles of today are no where near as interesting as their ancestors.
