My vote would go for the villain. if it wasn't for him/she/it the story wouldn't move. but as far as good guys i'd say the Thief. A part of me is klepto to the monsters and bosses.
History is destined to repeat itself, during the conversation between Rufus and Kadaj (Right before summoning Bahamut SIN) he said something about,
"Jenova and Sephiroth and that what ever happens we will obey the rule of life. The outcome of your actions will always be the same."
I think that as long as Cloud is alive a piece of Sephiroth is as well. Kadaj, Loz, Yazoo, Jenova, Sephiroth and all the Jenova cells that were removed from the children still exist in the life stream. Thus the cycle keeps on going.
