Smash Bros. is an outstanding series, no fighting game has as much length or unlockable content than Melee from my experience. It's really, in my opinion, awesome as well for the fact that 4 people can play and it has an awesome selection of characters. Only crap thing about it is when you characters with clone moves (eg- Captain Falcon and Ganondorf etc).

You sure about that? Marvel V. Capcom 2 had an insane amount of unlockables.
I can't make your mind up for you, but I highly recommend buying a DS now and a Wii soon afterwards. DS has awesome range of games and is the cheapest of the current gen consoles. Not to mention you can take it with you.
