Viennoiserie Blog

Congrats for all the new iMods!

Yup, a new mod draft just finished. I knew one would come soon, but that soon?!... I was reading the blog of a friend of mine when he mentioned "Congrats on edubuccaneer for becoming a mod". Next thing you know, I jumped to Eduardo's profile... iMod emblem. Well, if they selected him as a reviews moderator, he could have been selected separately, as Draqq, DrFish and MrCHUP0N. Anyway, went to see to AtM if they announced there the draft, I seen it on the forums page.

So, the new mods are:

cakeorrdeath

CodingGenius

DirkVDV01

Mad_Scientist

UpInFlames

Gallego

Jerell_rast

edubuccaneer

matcoke

So, let me say my regards on every single one of them...

cakeorrdeath: Mainly seen him on System Wars, which is probably why I think Casey Wegner and Jake Toricello recommended him. What can I say, he surely belongs to the core of SW regulars that are surely more intelligent and thoughtful than most of the other posters.

CodingGenius: Met him on the CCU, but the first time I seen him posting was grambyte's blog (by the way, where are you grambyte? I really miss your good ol' blogs. :( ). He's a nice guy and I have never seen him doing something wrong, but didn't actually thought he was going to be modded. Without a doubt, though, the community managers have made a good choice.

DirkVDV01: Surprising presence, but yet not so surprising if we take a look at his friends list and the places where he hangs out the most... Just that I hope he won't do the exactly same thing bhame did - leaving GS after only 2 months since being modded. By the way, I really dunno why bhame has still the mod badge even though he hasn't logged in since Octomber. Even though he's pretty active on another site...

Mad_Scientist: Nice to see a VU regular in this list, even though I'm not very familiar with this person. Like I said, only seen him posting on the VU, but yet again, I can't say Bethany has made a bad choice...

UpInFlames: A pretty good poster over General Games Discussion, but sincerly I wasn't expecting (and neither himself) to seen him becoming a mod, but on the other hand, I think he's a better choice than LaP was last draft. (LaP got demoted in only few months because he barely logged in...)

Gallego: You certainly deserve this 100%. No doubt on that.

Jerell_rast: I have seen him around, but I seriously didn't expect him to move so high in the ranks.

edubuccaneer: Remember when I celebrated one year of GameSpot membership and I awarded Edu my "User of the Year" award? Well, at that time I said he really should become a moderator. And... voila! Even though a gMod position wouldn't be too bad for him, I gotta say he's very suitable to a reviews/video blogs moderator position. Congratulations, Edu! :)

matcoke: Huh, he tracked me back, for some reason, few months ago, on my old account. Weird, since I haven't posted on SSN and System Wars Union for months, so why would he track me back?... Anyway, he become a mod. I would have expected from Soul to bring up some recommendations.

It's weird though that no one from Goose's Garage and Church & State got promoted... Maybe, if Goose, MarkSmith and Elraptor made recommendations to the community managers, the requirements weren't obtained by those recommended users...

So, that's it. Short version, congratulations to everybody and see you wearing the gMod/tMod badge soon! As for the others... good luck on reaching the next draft. :) I'm sure that the people who would have talent for moderating will get recognized by the staff sooner or later. Don't lose your faith! :)

What else can I say?...

...I have finished the portfolio I had to make for French. It rocks and it's ready to be printed!...

For sure, I'll get an A+ mark. :)

Busy like usual,

Viennoiserie

Schoolwork yet again

Today I had 2 tests (yes, 2 tests in only one day!) and for tomorrow I got to make a portfolio for French, so I decided to make one on Raphael Marionneau - my favorite DJ - 'cause, even though he's German, he was born in France, so yay for me.

PS3 - First Impressions

:D Yesterday I finally got the PlayStation 3 and I could say that I haven't been so enthusiastic in a while. The price tag is humongous, but, without a doubt, it's worth it. Maybe not now, but in two-three years, who knows? The same thing happened with the PS2 - and just look at what sales it got in 7 years!...

The one thing I was sorry was that I was unable to take some photos - only an image could have described the smiley on my face! I'm really digging the glossy black look of it - few years ago, when I first saw a PS3, I didn't liked it's looks, but now I can say that the overall design is better than the 360's design. Also, it's pretty silent and, so far, no sign of technical problems - which shouldn't be so surprising since I've heard from other PS3 owners that the problems aren't so big as the 360's "three red lights of death". It was pretty hard for me to find a right spot for the console, but, in the end, I found the proper spot - exactly under the TV, where my XBOX used to "live". Talking about XBOX, I was fascinated about its dashboard the first time I've bought it, but I can say that I like PS3's dashboard much better. Maybe not so innovative, but it manages to be easy-to-use and have an interesting, minimalistic look in the same time. I really like the fact I can change the color scheme of the dashboard, something I've always missed at XBOX's dashboard, so whenever I get sick of the hot pink look - no problemo! I can change it easily to a more blue-ish dashboard. Maybe these things aren't so relevant, but, at least at the beginning, you spend so much time on the dashboard doing all the necessary settings... Yes, I made an account at PSN, but mostly for fl0w and other such downloadable games, so I won't accept any friend requests, if you manage somehow to nail my code...

Instead of buying the premium bundle, I preffered to buy the games seperately. So far, not intending to buy MotorStorm and Resistance, but so far I will be playing with Ridge Racer 7...

...Virtua Fighter 5, a game with awe-inspiring graphics...

...and now 2 games I've imported from Japan. These don't work on the console I bought, but I'll get around asking a friend of mine (who sells games at a local shop) to import a PS3 from Japan... Until then, I can gaze at the awesome box arts of Mahjong Taikai IV...

...and Mahjong Kakutou Club.

Plus, I was just notified by the GameSpot staff that I got a new emblem - "Avatar in a bottle". Looks pretty awesome. Thanks, GS, for accepting my avatars! :) And now I should go and play these new games + S.T.A.L.K.E.R. After playing 2-3 minutes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I can say it looks pretty awesome. In spite of disabling only few details, it still looks awesome, without having only few frames per second. I am curious how much can I go through the game world without getting warned, "Hey! Aren't you walking too far from the game area?!..." The way the environment looks is simply awe-inspiring... Seeya!

Wii Will Buy PS3

This is it. I can't take this any longer!...

In a few hour, I'll be experiencing the latest in gaming technology and... Really? I don't need catchy intros and such other distractions! Let's make it short: I have ordered a PS3!...

Tomorrow I might blog my first impressions... Until then, see you on the other side!...

Pink Floyd, theater and Union Post Counts. Loco.

Since I've already noticed that some of you are very impatient, I decided to put the Union Post Counts Leaderboard I've done at the beginning of this "wall of text" instead of the end of it... Also, so that you wouldn't say you weren't warned: if you're trying to accuse me once again, give solid arguments or I'll mark your post as trolling.

Being a very open-minded person, I've tried yesterday to expand my musical horizons and buy something that's slightly different from the music I usually listen to.

If you haven't recognized the box art yet, I'm talking about Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". Considered a masterpiece, this album was released in 1973. Once listening to the album, I couldn't believe my ears - is this actually released in 1973?!?... One could analyze the album and agree that, even though it may not be "the best rock album ever", like some critics said, Dark Side of the Moon is a timeless masterpiece. This is how a good album should sound like. An album should be a concept, not a bunch of singles. Dark Side of the Moon is one of those rare albums you can appreciate even if you aren't into the genre. I don't like rock music too much, and still I can see why this album is so hyped. 9/10

And I have been at the theatre... Actually, I've watched the screenplay of a comedy at school, thanks to top-notch IT technology... Well, the weirdest part was the one where we launched the movie and instead of a normal player, I have seen a DOS prompt showing how the movie is loading and then... the movie and only that. For some odd reason, there was no interface attached to the player... :| I've enjoyed the comedy but what I do not enjoy is that I have to end this right now, because once again GameSpot says that I exceeded the word limit. :|

Celebrating One Year of Active Contributing to GameSpot

DISCLAIMER: Everything stated here solely is my pure opinion. No advertising intended.

So... GameSpot... I remember that, ages ago, back in 1999, I saw in a local games magazine an article about Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (I am a big fan of the series and I've always considered Abe's Oddyssey if not one of the best games ever, then at least the best platformer ever) which included some screenshots from the game which had GameSpot's logo watermarked. Of course, at that time I was unaware of what the logo meant, but in a later issue of that magazine, there were several links to gaming sites, including GameSpot. That's how I discovered GameSpot. After several attempts, I've managed to convince my father to let me visit GameSpot on his computer at where he works (at that time, I didn't had an Internet connection). And so I've visited the site for the first time in order to find out more about Abe's Exoddus. After I've finally got an Internet connection at home several years ago, I've became a regular visitor of the site...

... I regret though the fact I've only registered in March 19 2006. I could have caught a much better period for the forums when many more good forumites were around. But because there's no such thing as a time machine, I'll now have to do something for a better future. For instance, trying to be a good poster. And, well, it seems I have managed to do that in one year...

Because this needs to be celebrated more than other 1-year celebrations I have seen, I will do all my best to celebrate it in my own unique st*yle... Because GoScers 2007 isn't around for some reason, I'll try now to do a Viennoiserie's Awards Or Whatever They're Called 2006! :)

To begin with something big, I'll begin with the category "User of the Year". In my opinion, the user of the year 2006 should be... edubuccaneer! One of the best contributors of this community, Eduardo makes always a great job no matter if it's a blog, review or forum post. Other honorable mentions would be Noweb_basic (who would have won if he wouldn't have concentrated his efforts too much on videos) and NeoJedi, another impressive contributor that was close to winning...

The next category is named "Moderator of the Year", which isn't based on moderations as much as on mediating the discussions. A winner at this category looks more like... DJ_Lae! Posting for many years and initially known as Laeorn, DJ_Lae has become a GameSpot moderator at the first mod draft of 2006 and ever since proved that he can succesfully be a mediator, without reducing his typical "coolness" that makes him so charming. Two honorable mentions would be Skylock00 for doing a very good job on the VU and on General Games Discussion, and Draqq_Zyxorian for being by far the best reviews moderator. I sometimes wonder how it would have been if he was moderating the forums instead, but you gotta admit that if there's one thing that makes him such a good contributor, then that would be his reviews - overall, a true role model for this community. I also woud like to mention bhame for being such an underappreciated moderator that even himself underestimates his qualities. Too bad he hasn't logged in for half an year - he could have a really good job in the forums...

Another big category is "GameSpot Staff Member of the Year". It's very hard to make a decision especially since there are around 150 GS admins and many of them haven't posted anything in the forums nor wrote in their blogs or "About Me" section of their profiles. But my opinion is my opinion, so my opinion is this - the best admin of the year 2006 is... Lee Alessi! In the past few months, he managed to not limit himself to the Collection Missing Games thread and also post in other parts of the site and also make a blog, in spite of being a very busy man! Many times in these years of browsing the site, I wished I could add the game I was searching for in GameSpot's database. I was very excited to discover the Collection Missing Games almost an year ago and ever since I've constantly contributed because I don't like seeing other people suffering because they couldn't find the game they wanted to know more about on GameSpot - which, mind you, is considered by many the no. 1 gaming site... Back on-topic, another honorable mentions would be Sondra Coyleart (did I mispelled?...) for being a very friendly presence among the staff. Ever since I've discovered her profile, we talked a lot. It looks like I'm not alone on this world. Yipee. Also, Stanley Lin deserves a nomination for his crazy blogs, his typical coolness and his outgoing attitude that's unfortunately pretty rare in the GameSpot staff. You guys rock.

A more bizarre category is "Surprise of the Year". What other bigger surprise than the arrival of... Kreestas?!?... This man is probably the most lucky folk on the entire site. Do you remember any other user who got such a shocking amount of emblems and became a moderator in only 3 months after signing up? Of course, stats aren't important, but nothing else that happened this year shocks more than seeing Kreestas' profile for the first time. 'Nuff said... Other two surprises? Of course, the resign of Greg Kasavin was a shocking announcement that determined a massive earthquake in the bottom of our hearts. Greg, you shall never be forgotten. Also, another thing that affected me - Phreak64's decision to not only move SW2 outside GameSpot but also delete the entire SW2 board on GS. I didn't care about SW2 as much as I do about the VU or the CCU, but my "Top Posters" list would have been much more accurate since there are probably many users who didn't got on that list because they only used to post on SW2...

The winner of the category "Best GameSpot Board" is, without a doubt, The Virtual Underground. I've seen many people talking about it as if it's some kind of secret lair where "the mods talk about the n00bs they hate". :| Sorry, guys, but there's already a board like that called the "Moderator Backroom". The Virtual Underground is, indeed, full of mods, but it isn't mods-only. Think of it as a "General Games Discussion" kind of board with occasional intelligent OT threads. There are many quality posters (including veteran GS users) and many cool threads that simply makes it an addictive board - once you get into it, it's hard to leave the VU.

And... well... that's it. I don't got anymore ideas for another category and anyway I didn't want to put categories like the Worst whatever because I wanted only positive energy to vibe in this blog entry... I guess I'll have to end, hope I didn't exceeded the word limit... Seeya! :)
