I'm a really big fan of RPGs, and while good ones are released (Final Fantasy 7, Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Oblivion, Mass Effect, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, just to name a few), I'm finding that the ones I consider to be my favorites are still all from the 16-Bit era. Final Fantasy 3 (6), Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force 2, and so on. Many of the more recent titles are up there on my list, but I find them still just under the great titles from the Super NES and the Sega Genesis. This holds true for more then just the RPGs as well. Those were both great systems with a lot of really great games.
While I do love the new and improved systems with all the fancy graphics, online play, and all the other extra bells and whistles. I can't help but feel a little sad that games aren't still made the same way they used to be. Teams making the games have so much more to worry about now, that I think the main things that made the old ones so great suffer a little bit, story and game play. This holds true for some games more then others.
Granted, I do look forward to seeing what constant and new advancements games make all the time. I just need to take a step back sometimes and give these older titles the praise they still rightfully deserve.
