NeoTokyo and Goldeneye Source impressions.

Well after getting piss at GM lol, I decided to try something that I have done before, but never succeedwith sadly, and that is downloading a mod. I look into some of the mods that is run by the source engine from Valve, and I found two which I decided to give a try. They are NeoTokyo and Goldeneye Source.

So I already played a little of both of them, and I will give both my first impressions.

I will start with NeoTokyo. NeoTokyo is a FPS thatseems to be similar to Counter Strike andhasa ghost in the shell setting. There are two teams, and the main goal in this game is to find the "ghost" and capture random spawned objects. The ghost part is like CTF, but if you team has the ghost, then you can see where the players on the other team are. Thematches is set up into rounds, and if you died, then you have to wait for the next round.

First off, I really love the setting.I like thefuture like tokyo setting, and the graphics looks beautiful, even through the mod is not running the latest source engine. And I swear this game has the cell-shaded look, even through the graphics are more on the realistic side. It just beautiful. However I just can't get into the gameplay. Maybe I am just not used to that very tactical squad based type FPS. And even more annoying it like the players from the other team will instantly find me, just moments after the round started. I guess the they found the ghost pretty quickly. So I actually hardly got into the matches, because I keep getting kill at the first few moments of the round! And sadly this mod seems like a ghost town. When I went through the big list of servers, I only saw two that were active. Hopefully this mod will get more popular, but for me I just couldn't get into the CS like gameplay. I might still play it but probably not much. No bigger through, since it is free, so hey it was worth a try.

Now for Goldeneye Source, which I enjoy a lot more. It is a remake of the multiplayer part of Goldeneye for the N64. I never really played GE for the N64, but this mod reminded me alot of Nightfire, so I got into the mod pretty quickly. You just choose from 9 characters, and just go through Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch. They seem to have remade the multplayer very well. The music sounds like, the maps looks good (you can even play the cla.ssic versions), and it just feel like Nightfire to me, So I really enjoy this mod fast. However is it just me, or are some of the guns are so overpowered? I swear I keep getting kill by 1 or 2 hits from a handgun (not the golden gun). I just died within seconds, but otherwise I am enjoying the mod a lot more then NeoTokyo, and this will probably be the closest thing of playing Goldeneye for me.:(

Well that my impressions for both. They have some flaws, but hey they are free mods and they are being improve with new updates. For Neo Tokyo, I say give it a try, and see if you enjoy the gameplay or not. For Goldeneye Source, I would say definitely try it, especially if you love the original, or like 007 in general. You just need a steam anccont, and at least one source game (Half Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Source, and a couple of others) in order to play these game.

Edit (second impressions): Well I been playing these mods more today. I am actually starting to enjoy NeoTokyo more now that I am slowly getting the hang of how it is play. I also love how the maps are design, through a couple might be a bit too complex. This mod also has a amazing soundtrack, but it isn't in-game, which make it seems to be a waste of time (at the moment that is).:?

As for Goldeneye, I am still enjoying, however I notice a major flaw, which I kinda mention in my first impressions. This mod has some weapon balance issues. Some weapons like most of the handguns, are so overpowered, while weapons like SMG type guns and even some shotguns are underpowered. Also some matches can be a mine fest, which can be a pain in the neck.
