Game Developers Conference - The Aftermath

GDC is officially over and I guess a few people are a little dissapointed that there were no MAJOR blockbuster announcements, but there were a ton of teasers that made the event sing and dance.

Where do we begin, how about the announcement of OnLive. This neat little gadget has the potential to render consoles other video gameproducts useless with the concept of cloud computing. Now I don't know the whole concept of cloud computing, but I did hear one thing that made it sing, the chance to play Crysis on a low quality PC, and even your T.V. I for one have never been able to play Crysis, mainly because I never bought it because my computer just wouldn't handle it. OnLive will runa game on a supercomputer a large distance away, and through server technology stream the game running on the super computers and servers to your television screen. This means that Crysis can play on a low quality computer with ease, and retain its incredible features. The potential of OnLive could make a lot of console users fork over the subscription fee and join the service. I'm sure more news will be released on the service, and I am looking forward to it.

There were a lot of rumours going around that Sony had a ton of announcements to make, a long with a price cut. Although there weren't a ton of announcements, gameplay videos of two of the most anticipated PS3 games were leaked on the internet, and the announcement of the next installment of the Ratchet and Clank series was released, which I personally am really excited about. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time will be released in the fall, but that news took a backseat to leaked gameplay footage of both Uncharted 2 and God of War 3. Although both of the videos were horrible quality, itis truly obvious that these games are going to be major hits when they reach store shelves around the holiday season.

The next thing I will talk about is another little stab towards Square-Enix. Some of you may call me a PS3 fanboy, and you may be right, but my love for all 3 consoles are equal, but I will admit I do have a little favourtism towards the PS3 from time to time. I read an article about The Last Remnant and why no PS3 release date has been released and there was just this awkward silence. From my perspective, and from a lot of others, it appears they have cancelled the PS3 version, probably due to complications with the Unreal Engine. Square is certainly not keeping their multiplatform philosophy true, and if the game is cancelled, they should just say so and stop us from wondering whether or not it is true. Some are probably thanking Square-Enix for doing this due to the games low performance, but I for one was looking forward to getting this for PS3 as I didnt want to go through the technical issues of the 360 version, hoping the PS3 version would solve these problems. It appears I will have to go with the PC version, which I don't mind.

Where was Microsoft at this conference? They were doing what they were supposed to be doing, giving speeches at the conference. It appears Microsoft are the smart ones as they are waiting until E3 to announce their new titles. I'm sure a lot of people are anticipating Halo 3 ODST (I know I am) and Alan Wake, but I'm sure Microsoft will give release dates to these games at E3.

Congrats to Hideo Kojima for recieving the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Congrats for starting another Metal Gear debate. At the end of his keynote speech, a message which may hint to a Raiden Metal Gear spin off was shown. This message sparked the forums to fire up, speculating as to what the message may mean, also sparking debates as to which will it be, multiplatform or PS3 exclusive. I for one believe it is a hint to a new Metal Gear game, but as for what platform(s), do I know? No. Do I care? Yes. It should stay a PS3 exclusive due to the fan base but hey, I've been wrong before.

Thanks for reading my second blog. My next blog will be written next weekend at roughly the same time. Comment if you like.

Square-Enix should release some of their XBOX 360 exclusives on the PS3

Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4, although not developed by Square-Enix, they certainly are published by the japanese video game giant. Ever since Square developed their philosophy of releasing on multiple platforms, 360 fans were excited about being able to bask in the goodness as to what playstation supporters have experienced for the better part of a decade.

Although it may not be a lot, there are certainly some people in the gaming community who are puzzled as to why Square developed this philosophy, but have yet released a single game on the PS3 instead showing the 360 tons of love with timed exclusives like The Last Remnant, and exclusives like Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery.

There are a few reasons behind this, 1 is that Square is determined to see the XBOX 360 excel in Japan, and decide to release some japanese role-playing games for the system to coerce gamers to buy the system. This is the most viable fact as it actually seems true. Role-playing games are huge in Japan and releasing some for the 360 should coerce consumers into buying the system. This is in fact true, as around the time Infinite Undiscovery was released, the 360 overtook both the PS3 and the Wii for a limited time, and the same could be said a few weeks ago when Star Ocean 4 was released.

The 2nd reason, which a lot of people believe to be true, but a reason which Square firmly denies, is that Microsoft paid Square, and Tri-Ace to develop these games exclusively for their system. If they were paid, then Square wouldnt have to worry about the sales as the cost of development was probably paid by Microsoft.

Now, if the true fact is the first reason, Square should release these games for the PS3 as well. As it stands right now in Japan, the sales of PS3 vs 360 stand around 4-1 or 5-1 in favour of the PS3, and Star Ocean 4 sold pretty well for a franchise that 360 owners probably have never played. Imagine if it was released for the PS3, the Star Ocean series has been a staple for the Playstaion brand in Japan for years prior, (alongside Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy) and releasing it on the PS3 could result in sales roughly 3-4x that of XBOX 360 in Japan, which means Square would make more of aprofit, and thus have more money to make better games. The same should go for Infinite Undiscovery, although the game is a new IP, it would still sell better on the PS3 in Japan due to the install base.

Concearning what I said, the same probably couldn't be said about North America. Despite many of the people who own the system are probably JRPG fans, games like Infinite Undiscovery wouldnt have a large impact here, due to it being a fairly unknown game, but Star Ocean is a different story, as previous entries in the series were originally on playstation and it is believable that fans have been born because of this.

If the truth is in fact the second reason, then pretty much my entire blog here is nullified as Microsoft probably has some exclusive contract, which cant be broken. (Unless you take the Tecmo approach and release a different version of the game)

Thanks for reading my debut blog, Im sure that since it is my first I have made a few mistakes but I am grateful that you read it, and I am open to any criticism you have of me as what you say will help me improve my blogs in the near future.

I hope you read my nextblog which should be written sometime this week, and definately before Saturday night, or Sunday morning, wherever you may live.
