In anticipation for TES V: Skyrim, a terrifying fact dawned on me. I love RPGs with a passion ever since I played with the Gameboy Colour (I imagine it was Pokémon that was one of the first), but I have never met another person who shares this love. I know they exist as forums and internet prove, but they have never shown up in my life. Here, I'm just thinking about that point.
Role Playing Games are my favourite type of game. Nothing can top them for enjoyment, replay value, choices, direction and the feeling that is realistic... to a degree. I can't express how much I like them and it unfathomable that I would try. No matter how much I babble, you won't know how I feel, unless you feel the same.
But that is the problem, as little as it may seem. When I speak about the RPGs I have played, good or bad, no one ever responds with the same enthusiasm, just a sort of tolerant amusement. Am I odd? Am I the only person who buys RPGs nowadays?
No. Those people, like me, exist in great numbers as the internet proves to us time and time again. I can't say they don't exist with the sheer popularity they have. Heck, World of Warcraft is probably the most played games in existence and is an MMORPG. These people exist whether I like it or not, which I don't.
But it bothers me that no one shares the unquenchable enthusiasm that consumes me when playing RPGs or when anticipating the release of a new RPG I expect to find. In my world, community and social circles, I am very much alone. It worries me that with no outlet for such boundless adoration, I may lose it as time passes.
I try to engage people, I really do. I'm an avid reader, and I expect most RPGamers are similar. I can read David Copperfiel of an afternoon, then go Orc hunting in the evening. For me it is normal, but my friends are solely readers and the few that actually play games play ****c games or bar(-ish) games.
I don't write this to plead for a pen pal to discuss and obsess with, but, considering all this, a terrible thought came upon me.
Are RPGs slowly dying? Is lack of enthusiasm like a cancerous tumour threatening to kill with low survival rate>
I hope not.
The title of this represents the fear I hope to never fear. That not just one person, but many, will not know what I mean when I say Role Playing Game or RPG. So I try to spread the word, I try to generate interest.
Admittedly, I think RPGs are my way of living life to the full, by living many lives. They let me experience the inexperiencable.
