I think the most silly thing infinity ward and others did was they were desperate to SHOW REALISM. MW and so on tried to dramatise the feeling of war and show it like a movie. Previous games didn't show it like "hey look!! a nuclear missile launch" or "I'm running around like an a**hole while there are guns firing all over the place" Sure this looks good in paper, but it is the gunfights in previous games that made it feel real. In CoD 2, there was mission in Russian campaign where you had secured an abandoned building with lot of people and enemies threw smoke grenades then advanced in a rush. That is far more better experience than running on rooftops and then falling down.
