I've always been a fan of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and I've always enjoyed anything involving zombies. Whether it was Resident Evil 4 or Shaun of the Dead zombies have always captivated me in various ways. Today I stumbled upon the game Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse and watched trailers galore and instantly began to fall in love with the game. First of all, despite zombies being scary (supposedly) I've always thought that many concepts involving zombies were humorous, (dark humor for the most part) so when I found out that Stubbs was going to be a departure from the standard Resident Evil-esque concept, ( serious killer zombies in a mature and realistic plot blah, blah, blah, blah .......) I was hugely excited. The other thing about the game that piqued my interest was the perspective. Usually in zombie games, movies, etc. you see the story from the perspective of the human (s) trapped in a zombie infested city, house, etc. but in Stubbs, you play as the zombie and your goal is essentially to terrorize the aforementioned human (s). This perspective allows for some interesting gameplay ideas and mechanics. As we all know, a great game concept can still fail if developed wrong and this would seem to be the biggest threat to Stubbs' quality, but never fear because Stubbs is being developed by Wideload Games Inc. which was founded by Alex Seropian (the executive producer of the Halo games) and the game is being built using Halo 2's engine. I'm really excited about this game and for the time being it is number one on my wishlist. Hopefully a demo will be available soon so I can either confirm my hopes or feel regret at the wasted potential of the concept.
