First....as an Avid PC gamer....I would suggest asking this question in the PC forums, that way you can get the opinion of a like-minded mindset of which console is best for someone who is really into PC gaming, but is looking for a console on the side. A lot of the replies you'll get here in GGD will be from people who don't enjoy PC gaming or who have never touched it in the first place.
The 8800 GT sounds like the far better buy from what you've said.
First, you've said you're an Avid PC Gamer.
Second, you said you have a bunch of unplayed games.
Third, you said you were looking at the console to have something on the side.
Last, you said if you do get the 360, you probably wouldnt have much money left for games.
That being said.....an 8800 GT will allow you to take advantage of the unplayed games you already own in addition to all the excellent future games coming to PC you might be interested in. Since you already seem to have a library of games for the PC platform, might as well get the hardware that allows you to play the games that you've already spent money on.
You also mentioned RPGs....which ones? Most of the top-tier Western RPGs coming to 360 seem to be coming to PC, or have a likelyhood of appearing on PC given how the developers have operated in the past.
Second.....Xbox 360 isn't a console I'd recommend to an Avid PC Gamer looking for something on the side, at least not until you say exactly what kind gaming experience you're looking for in a console....is it for games that will never some to PC?....is it meant as a more social device when friends are over?...etc..
360 has too much crossover of games with PC in the genres that one would think an Avid PC gamer would be into and unless you're into racing, fighting, or sports titles, then you might want to examine what the other consoles have to offer in terms of games that arent on the PC platform or have a slim likelyhood of going to the PC platform.
If you're really looking a console to have on the side of your PC gaming habit......I would suggest getting the system that has the least in common with PC and PC-like games to get a broader gaming experience. The Wii looks like the top contender (it's inexpensive too), but I would wait till the library fills up more before getting one.
But like I said, from your circumstance it seems like the 8800GT would be a much better buy now......it's for a platform that you already know you enjoy the games on, and second, you already have a bunch of unplayed games waiting to be used on the hardware.

I actually already have a Wii. :) I'm pretty lazy when it comes to updating my GameSpot games library.
Games such as Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, and Eternal Sonata looked tempting.
I think you're right, though. The 360 has too many crossover titles, and besides, I don't feel like getting another long ethernet cable (I use wired internet) and running it into my room for the 360. The 360 VGA cable doesn't seem to support my native resolution of 1440x900, either, so...
