The very best Playstation RPG of 2006 was Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.

God of War succeeded in trying to translate a Hollywood action movie-style plot to a videogame, and being badass at the same time.

RE4 succeeded in being a completely fresh experience for both first time Resident Evil players, and the long-time vets, as well.
It is a top-rate action game, with some pretty spooky moments (monks chanting, or suits of armor, anyone?) Sure, it may be too different for some people--but a game that pleases both the graphics-whores, and the action game purists is a-ok in my books.

It basically comes down to this; Fan of Devil May Cry? Get GoW. Fan of the Survival Horror/Shooter genre, but still enjoy the trademark humour of Resident Evil? Get RE4. ;)
