The House Of The Devil
by XxxExtremeNJBXx on Comments
I can't quite recall when I first heard about this movie -- It was one of those movies you see randomly while looking at "coming soon" movie sections, movie lists, etc. While recently trying to find a "good" and "actually scary" horror movie, I stumbled upon this. It got decent reviews and I see critics overall loved it(Check RT), I became interested, and I have Netflix instant stream to thank for making it all-the-more easier. I covered the windows in my living room(thus making it dark) and watched it alone. I was in for something crazier than I had initially imagined.
Story/Plot: Samantha(played by Jocelin Donahue) tries to get her own place, and under-pressure, winds up desperately taking a job offer as a babysitter. After the man who placed the ad calls her and appoints a meeting, and fails to come, Samantha tries to forget about it and move on -- Only later to be called by the same guy, apologizing on his behalf and stating that he was busy and had someone else call for the offer, only to be turned down.
She has her best-friend, Megan(played by Greta Gerwig) drive her down to a house thats not anywhere close to her campus, and insist that she will come along -- We are amused by a conversation taking place during the drive that confirms why she got the job. Upon arrival, Samantha and Megan are greeted by an odd, but well-mannered man. Samantha is confronted by Mr. Ulman(Tom Noonan) who he ask to talk alone, saying he can only pay for one-persons' time. Samantha understands and tells him that she only came to drive her there and back.
Samantha then find out that there isn't any longer a child in the picture. Mr. Ulman only said that to derive from the fact that it's really his mother that needs looking after. While at first reluctant in taking the offer, Mr. Ulman offers $300(twice as much, if I'm correct, than he previously offered). Samantha agrees on $400, acknowledging that she'll only be there for a couple of hours.
Megan, on-the-other-hand, leaves because she doesn't feel right about it, stating that it's "too good to be true", Samantha insist that she can not turn this offer down -- Megan leaves angerily and saddend, still bent on picking her up when the time comes. Samantha laters meets Mrs. Ulman, who is even more odd than Mr. Ulman. The two wind up leaving, and things get crazy and shocking from that point-on.
I can't go any further detail, simply because I reach spoiler-territory.
Ti West does some clever things for the plot. It manages to stand-out on it's own while bringing a ****c scenario in the mix. 9/10
Acting: Truly remarkable. Jocelin Donahue portrays Samantha in such a great manner -- Making her a charming, down-on-her-luck type of girl. I've never seen a film featuring Jocelin Donahue, and I think she was perfect for the role. Greta Garwig does the most with the screen-time she gets -- Mary Woronov and Tom Noonan also do an exceptional job. They seem to be natuarally creepy while keeping their well-mannered approach intact. I think that AJ Bowen as the son was ok -- His acting was believeable until further down the road, where it kinda felt forced and kinda cheesy. Overall, some great-acting all-around. 8.8/10(I wanted to get this higher because of Jocelin Donahue, but, the acting just feels kinda cheesy/corny from the other cast-mates, maybe it's because of their characters', I don't know).
Cinematography/CGI: I thought it was a believable setting. Nothing special to set your eyes on, but a great environment for an '80's horror movie setting. 8/10
Direction: I really, really loved it. Ti West gets some brilliant shots on this one, and every-angle serves a great purpose. 9/10
Editing/Sound: The music, along with the editing, made this a creepy movie. The '80's setting and vibe it gives is impressive. Ti West knew when to add a scary-feel with music, and a '80's feel with some of the credits and music also. Amazing soundtrack and editing all-around -- Possibly perfect. 9.9/10
Effectiveness: This movie effected me. The loud, abrupt music in one scene was all that I could handle, and the "first" abrupt, shocking scene was a jaw-dropping moment for me. Ti West doesn't include any blood on the first-act, the second-act with the "jaw-dropping" scene is the first-scene that includes blood, and the third-act is insane and chaotic -- Leaving me mesmerized when I walked out of the room. I heard the movie wasn't gory and it's rated R for: some bloody violence, which, in my opinion, doesn't get across how bloody the third-act is. You literally get a close-up shot of someone that doesn't have a face and it's really bloody and almost grotesque. Not only that, but, the movie gives you some food for thought at the end. Overall, effective movie. 9/10
Accurance: There are some obvious flaws with this one. I noticed one clearly and IMDb.com will point out some other obvious ones. 5.9/10
Entertianment: This is where certain people tend to complain. The first-act introduces the main-character, the second-act shows her bascially wondering and roaming the house aimlessly, and the third-act goes balls-out. I still really enjoyed the pacing and thought it was refreashing and entertaining. 9/10
Worth-Factor. If you wanna see a film that isn't your average-horror film, this is the one for you. There's no sex/nudity, there's some language, nothing strong, and not really any guts. The film plays off innocent only to make the scenes with satanic-themes and bloody violence all-the-more shocking. If you love "different" and "thoughtful" horror-films, give this one a try. 9/10
Other Redeeming qualities: The cast, script, and atmosphere of the '80's is awesome -- They do a great job picking out '80's hair****, clothing, etc. But, there are also some faults. The scenes near the ending isn't really believable, but, it may be because it was "all apart of the plan". and like I stated earlier, there are goofs in this film. Atleast you get a "different" horror-film that knows what it's doing. 7.9/10
Conclusion: I really enjoyed this movie. The acting was great, the direction and editing/soundtrack was brilliant, and the '80's setting was a nice addition. Ti West made some other films that, not only look uninteresting, but failed to receive the feedback that this one proudly received. I walked away from this film wanting more, and hoping for sequel or prequel. This one out-beat 'The Crazies' for me, and I really liked that one. While many will probably hate this for the pacing, third-act, and questionable-plot scenarios', this is a hidden gem, waiting to be found.
My Score: 8.5/10
Pan's Labyrinth
by XxxExtremeNJBXx on Comments
This was a film I was really looking foward to. It was on a website's best-films of the decade, a book's 101 Movies To See Before You Die(earning it's #25 spot), it's in the top 100 best-rated films on IMDb, and many more. I couldn't take the hype and HAD to see it -- It possibly exceeded my expectations.
Story/Plot: "In the fascist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world."
There are sub-plots, one concerning Ofelia, a young girl caught in a brutal reality, while the other's are wrapped around the "villian", who, like his father, is somehow obsessed with time and power, we don't get a in-depth look why he is the way he is, but, on-screen we witness his sheer evil, almost unflinchingly, he is kinda one of those, "evil just for the sake of being evil" characters, but, it's done well -- a doctor and care-taker, who also plays a big-role in this film(Just because the movie is the way it is, I won't explain any further about these characters)
The film manages to bring fantasy with reality quite nicely, it doesn't feel out-of-the-ordinary or anything like that -- We get a story told to us remarkably and brutally. Although, the movie may seem vague, we don't get some answered qustions on certain things, but, it may only seem that way because what we witness is such a magnificant story, that we yearn to learn more about. Overall a great story the feels like what could be a "dark" version of Alice In Wonderland. 9.9/10
Acting: The acting in this is very convincing. I don't recall any fake reactions, cheesy-lines or anything sub-par in this subject. The leading star, Ofelia(played by Ivana Baquero), is really, really talented. She portrays innocence and neglect quite beautifully -- Vidal(played by Sergi López) also did an amazing job, we truely get an evil charachter here, not so much in an unrealistic way. I'd like to also give an applause to Mercedes(played by Maribel Verdú), Carmen( played by Ariadna Gil), and anyone else involved in this extraordinary film. 9.3/10
Cinematography/CGI: This is another beautiful aspect on the film. The fantasy world is done with such effort -- Along with the setting, it's really something. I saw the film on DVD and because of that, the CGI didn't seem special, while it was decent. Overall, I love the look of the film. 9.7/10
Direction: Guillermo del Toro picks some nice shots for this film and there are some truly great-scenes in this movie, along with providing a story to be told very-well, nearly perfect. 9.5/10
Editing/Sound: I thought they did a good job -- Everything sounds nice and nothing felt out of place. 9.5/10
Effectiveness: It's not neccessarily scary, but the atmosphere is creepy. The film is extremely dark, so, they show the overly graphic things off-screen(such as an amputation and a torture-scene) -- the latter particularly we see the aftermath of. it's bloody, disturbing and just out-right brutal. Because of the context and victim(which I will not give away), I don't think I would've watched this scene if they included it uncut. The film knows how to pull emotions out of you and it's extremely thought-provoking. 10/10
Accurance: There's obviously goofs in this movie(IMDb.com), but, a lot of them, I didn't even notice. 8.1/10
Entertainment: I was nothing more than amused until the second-half -- This is where things get extremely interested. 8.9/10
Worth-Factor: It's definitely true, in this case. If you can handle the graphic violence and dark theme, this is a must-watch. 9.8/10
Other Redeeming Qualities: Great Script and costumes -- A film that doesn't prolong itself even though it seems it can and it's a complete not-waste of time. that manages to be very thought-provoking. 9.9/10
Conclusion: This is close to a masterpiece. I witnessed a goof once, and the ending relies too heavily on the individual audience perspective. I thought a lot about this film after I watched it. The memorable-scenes, dark themes, great acting, eerie atmosphere, killer-direction, unique charachter's, and lovable cinematography make this film something special. it's the ultimate fantasy movie for the older audience.
My Score: 9.4/10(Note: I would honestly like to give this a higher-rating, but, based on how I rate it, this is how everything turned out to be. If it wasn't for the rating, I'd give it atleast a 9.8/10.)
'The Social Network'
by XxxExtremeNJBXx on Comments
When I saw the trailer for 'The Social Network, I expected a "good" movie. Nothing more, nothing less. Upon it's release, I noticed it got outstanding-reviews. Prompting me to see it as soon as possible. Netflix did not make this easy, but the time came. And boy, was it worth the wait.
Plot:"On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history... but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications." Written by Columbia Pictures.
David Fincher does a great job at staying true to the story. All of the character-development and events linking them reaches a brilliant climax.
Acting: The cast seems to be nothing-special. But, they truly do a spectacular job. Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, and Andrew Garfield deserve spotlight on this one. If it was not for their outstanding, convincing -portrayal, I don't think the film could hold it's own weight. Jesse Eisenberggives us a subtle performance as Mark Zuckerberg. I never knew was he was capable of, until now. Rooney Mara(Erica Albright)has a lot of potential, no wonder David Fincher choose her for his new, upcoming-movie - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. She doesn't get a lot of screen-time, but, her role is still kinda vital to the overall story. Nonetheless, her performance is amazing. Andrew Garfield(Eduardo Saverin)is perfect in this movie, playing Mark Zuckerberg's wealthy, best friend. The scene towards-the-end, stuck out for me. A really, really good performance on his behalf. Everyone else deserves a bit of credit, too. Brenda Song(Christy) pulls-it-off, as Andrew Garfield's(Eduardo Saverin)-GF. Props goes to Justin Timberlake(Sean Parker) and Patrick Mapel(Chris Hughes).
Entertainment Factor: It's definitely there ! I was consumed into the story and didn't want it to end.
Pro's: Everything. The acting, cinematography, music, editing, etc.
Con's: I don't think I can name one, except, I wish it would go on longer, it kinda leaves you saying "That's it?"
Overview: Looking at this movie, detail-by-detail, it's truly-magnificent. The friendship between Andrew Garfield(Eduardo Saverin) and Jesse Eisenberg(Mark Zuckerberg) is very, very well-done. It becomes a heart-breaking, shocking-conclusion by the end. I was captivated watching this movie, compelled to the very finish. Just a brilliant movie. David Fincher does it again - Making a movie that is meaningful, and worthy of your time.
My Score: 9.5/10
Misleading Movies.
by XxxExtremeNJBXx on Comments
Whether it's the descriptions, trailers, or plot. I am going to blog about movies I felt were misleading. Sweeping today's spot on the list is:
Take a look at the MPAA Rating
Rated R for: for strong bloody brutal violence and torture, a scene of rape, and pervasive language.
What if I told you all-of-the-above is a lie ? Let me explain, one-by-one.
Strong bloody brutal violence: This movie has "startling violence". There is a bloody and unexpecting "phone" scene. There is a torture-scene,which takes place entirely off-screen(:|) we briefly see the aftermath. There is a bloody shoot-out, and one-scene, in which, is extremely-bloody.(SPOILER ALERT) That scene being - A man in a jail cell is stabbed repeatedly in the neck with a bone until dead. Blood pulses out of his neck onto the walls and another man. Thanks, IMDb.com - There is like one other scene that may stand out, violent wise, but it doesn't hold up to it's appeal.
Torture: Like I said, entirely off-screen.
Rape: I'm not even sure if it happened, if it did, entirely off-screen.
Pervasive language: Nah. The film has like 40 F-Bombs alone throughout the entire-film, making it not "pervasive".
Don't be fooled by this one. It seems to go "balls-out" by descriptions, but, once you see the movie. You'll find out they actually kept it quite tame.

Movies I recently Watched

Although charming, Despicable Me doesn't have a lot going for it. It's constant-tune gets overused. It's charm wears-off by the end and it's not really funny, or entertaining. Through it's faults, you still have an original, family-friendly film that will "somewhat" please everyone.
My Score: 5/10
Next up is a film I've been wanting to see since it hit theatres.
It's lovable-casting makes this film a thrill-to-watch. The movie has not-only good-acting, but it's action scenes are very, very well done. Although it has a lot going-for-it. It's not very entertaining. It will go from entertaining, to dull. The romance was not handled-well. It was cheesy and pretty-much useless. It's pros outweigh it's cons....Somewhat. Regardless, The A- Team is definitely worth a try.
My Score: 6/10
Here's a horror-film I've been aching to see.
The Last Exorcism delivers a shocking, realistic (The ending isn't very realistic, though) outstanding premise. The acting is absolutely amazing. A lot of the time, I couldn't even tell they were acting. The film begins soo realistic, that when the "possession" takes place, it doesn't feel quite-right. The "horror" feel to it gets a tad-bit cheesy. But the music more than makes-up for it. When the movie's over, you'll become one of the three-groups. You'll either hate it, love it, or think it's so-so. Anyway, this is a must-watch !
My Score: 8/10
I may write a full-review of each movie. But, that's it... For now !
The Green Hornet
by XxxExtremeNJBXx on Comments
Last weekend, I saw "The Green Hornet" in 3-D. I was fairly excited(Although, Gamespot forums and Rotten Tomatoes defrauded much of it) I expected great-action scenes, very-good acting(By Seth Rogan, Jay Chou and Christoph Waltz) all-while being entertained. The latter failed-to-meet my expectations.
The Plot: "Playboy Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) becomes the new publisher of Los Angeles' "The Daily Sentinel" after the sudden death of his father. Britt's party life is about to change when he and his driver and kung fu expert, Kato (Jay Chou), stop a robbery. With the help of Kato, Britt starts a new career of fighting crime as the masked superhero "The Green Hornet".
Sounds like we got a good-plot, huh ? Wrong! This is were "The Green Hornet" fails, pretty-hard(Maybe because Seth Rogan helped write the script?) A lot of the time, we are forced to watch Britt insult, harrass, and act stupid - JUST to make-us laugh, which worked 50% of the time(Excluding me). The "action-scenes" are quite refreashing(Not-including the action-scenes at the end) Whenever Kato's heart starts pumping(We get the first-person view), he highlights the weapons, items and objects red, and there the action takes place.
The Acting: I'll be forming my opinion on the four-main characters, only. Britt Reid(played by Seth Rogan) is not a likeable character, at all ! I don't know if it has to do with Seth Rogan's portrayal of him or if he was like that in the first-place. He doesn't bring-much to-the-table. If he is not doing the stuff I mentioned earlier. He is - I don't know, asleep ? My opinon on his performance might seem vague, but it's probably because you'd have to have seen the film to understand. Kato(played by Jay Chou) on-the-other-hand, not only brings-forth an actually likeable character, but he's one of the few-things that actually make the movie work. Lenore Case(played by Cameron Diaz) is soley there to provide nothing-more than a "Love Interest". Her performance is not all-that bad, though. Chudnofsky(played by Christoph Waltz) is the best-actor in the entire film. He brings-forth a stern-villian that wants nothing-more than to be responsible for ALL the crimes. His professional look doesn't seem to "scare" anyone in the film, though.( They need someone wearing a mask or some-type of costume to do so - Go figure)
The Comedy Factor: It's not there - Unless you find Britt acting and talking stupid funny. Along with people not being able to pronounce "Chudnofsky" the right-way humerous.
The Pros: 3-D brings a lot more realism to the film. I felt, at times, that the people on-screen were actually RIGHT in-front of me. It's that good ! The action-scenes only help make 3-D worthwhile. The performances by Christoph Waltz and Jay Chou are the only mentionable ones.
The Cons: The dialogue is not well-done. It's consistently crude and profane trying to provide "Cheap Thrills" and laughs. Which it gets tiresome. Seth Rogans acting along with some pretty-pointless scenes doesn't sum-up well.(Besides the action-scenes - Watching the film in 3-D is kinda pointless, unless you like seeing flowers up-close-and-personal.)
Overview: I wanted to like this film, but by the time there was only -15 minutes left, I lost all-interest. I enjoyed the 3-D experience and the action-scenes. Watching the story unfold was somewhat interesting and I liked Jay Chou and Christoph Walt's performance. But the film couldn't reach my expectations. Simply because of the lazy, childish, profane script ruined just-about everything it had going for it.
My Score: 5/10
