------------------------------------------------------------------ MAY CONTAIN SEMI-SPOILERS ------------------------------------------------------------------ Story/Plot: Seth Brundle(Jeff Goldblum) is a inventor, who is fairly passionate about his work, maybe a little too passionate to outsiders, such as Veronica Quaife(Geena Davis), who he chats with at a party with intellectual speaking. He excitingly brings her over to his place to show what, he believes, is his "breakthrough". Not in the flaunting manner, as we learn she may be the very first to witness what his "creation" is capable of. We are introduced to these telepods, we witness first-hand what they are built to do, in which something is put into one of the telepods, only to be transmitted into the other, which is not put a few yards away. Veronica is amazed, and Seth tragically finds out that Veronica, is in fact, a reporter. Which quickly comes to Seth objecting Veronica, he doesn't want the word out, quite yet. Veronica dismisses the objections by telling her boss(and ex-lover) Stathis Borans(John Getz), all about the matter. Stathis believes she got fooled, stating it was only a "magic trick", therefore, he is uninterested in making it a story. Brundle arrives at her(Veronicas') job and re-informs her that he is not ready for it to become public, only because, while it is able to nonliving matter, it can't properly handle living things. They make a deal, Brundle will let Veronica track his progress as long as she waits to make the story public, they both accept the plea. They begin to build a friendship, which continues to become more than just a friendship, which then ultimately spirals out-of-control as Brundle's experiments go terribly awry. This movie builds it's tension brilliantly, it starts as a drama, sprinkles some horror elements in it, and slowly beings to play out like a thriller. A story that soon shows its more intriguing side, providing Brundle's transformation that is pleasant(in a not so pleasant way) to watch. Very original story that ends in an unpredictable tragic. 9.6/10 Acting: Outstanding. Jeff Goldblum plays Brundle in such a brilliant manner, it's truly flawless. Brundle is a genius, and Jeff doesn't give us anything short of that. His approach(the way he comes forth in whatever he does in such an on-spot manner, with such an eccentric vibe), speech(intelligent, impeccable pronunciation and use of words), appearance(his simple, odd way of dressing), etc - defines Brundle as a character, and that's exactly what Jeff gives us as he goes all-out in this performance. He is obsessed with his inventions/experiments, and Jeff makes this very believable a way that cannot be explained. Geena Davis' performance as Veronica Quaife is good, I can't say anything special about it since it didn't pertain to any impressive traits. On-the-other-hand, she does let her emotions flow quite well, without giving us "BS", to say the least. John Getz does a fine job at playing Stathis Borans. Props to all the extras' and everyone involved in this film. This was a tough category to discuss, because Jeff Goldblum was the only "outstanding" actor, to be honest. Overall, this film has some decent acting, but only one of which truly sticks out. 8/10 Cinematography/CGI: For it's time, it's pretty good. But it's definitely nothing special. 6.2/10 Direction: David Cronenberg knew exactly what he was going for, and portrayed it wonderfully. He sets this dark tone to the movie that is absolutely frightening, while also adding a realistic setting that can't be beat. These elements are perfectly conjoined and act as if they are really one, gold piece. He did something with this movie, that I felt failed for "The Thing", I can't put my finger on it. The two like to be compared, and for some odd reason, "The Thing" always seems to come out on top. I may be the only person on this world that thinks "The Fly" is much more superior than "The Thing". David crafted this movie so well, it's not often that you see a romance, sci-fi, horror, and drama perform as if it were made to be a thriller. 9.1/10 Editing/Sound: Very smooth, the scenes panned out coherently and concluded in an excellent manner. The sound was good for what it was, I don't recall any "fake-sounding" material or anything. 7.9/10 Effectiveness: I thought about this movie a lot after my viewing, how the "maggot" scene made me turn my head for a second, the "pus" and "vomit" scene made me gross-out, and how the ending made me feel somewhat depressed. Watching the transformation was not only hard to watch in a visual manner, but it also was psychologically and emotionally.This movie provided a thought-provoking aftermath, with plenty of chilling, frightening scenes. Pretty high up there on a effective aspect. 9.3/10 Accurance: I didn't notice any flaws, or any mistakes, whatsoever, in my viewing. But after visiting IMDb.com, there were approximately 16 mistakes. Just from the fact that they were not easily noticeable , I will not give this factor an extremely low-rating. 6/10 Entertainment: The film plays out like an average drama would, at first, but once you reach the 2nd act, things don't stop happening. Peril plays a prime-factor until the end from this point. I, personally, found it demanding your attention, in a subtle, well-informed kind of manner. 8.4/10 Worth-Factor: This is a must-see for any one that wants to see a great remake, an outstanding sci-fi movie, a movie bound to give them nightmares, and of course, an amazing horror movie. I only wanted to see it because my dad has been telling me for years on how good this movie was, I still couldn't grasp it being "THAT" good -- the rating on Rotten Tomatoes pretty much summed up my expectations. Regardless, you will not be disappointed watching this movie. 8.9/10 Other Redeeming qualities: The make-up is incredibly good, so good, even to this very day it still looks realistic(or at least partially). Other than that, it doesn't have much to offer on this scale. 6/10 Conclusion: I absolutely loved this movie. Obviously because it worked on so many factors. The material never felt trite, unorganized or misplaced. It made me feel all the emotions that it made its' motive. I don't see how I was really ever interested in watching this movie, however, I was surprised on just how good it was, and how under-rated it has been regarding the audience. Terrifying, and built on nightmares of a dark mind -- you will cringe, you will be shocked, you will love this movie. My Score: 7.9/10(Note: I too, was surprised with the rating I gave this overall, but when I think about it 7.9-8.0 basically sums up a great movie, still to my dismay)
