My Wii U Refurbished Experience

Last week I heard that my father in law was looking to get Mario Kart 8 since he had been playing it with my stepson and really enjoyed it. He wanted the game, but didn't have a Wii U. Since his birthday was coming up, I decided to get him the game and system as a surprise. Nintendo sells refurbished Wii Us and copies of Mario Kart 8, so I figured I could get them there and save some money. Altogether, it came to $254 and some change after (two day)shipping and tax. Not bad at all.

The Wii U console looks brand new. Same goes for the Gamepad. Even if you're really picky about this sort of thing, there is nothing to complain about on a cosmetic level. A couple things are missing from the package that you get with a new Deluxe. There are no 'feet' included to set the console up vertically, nor is there a Gamepad charge dock. These are no big deal and are cheap to buy separately if you want them.

I opened up the system to take care of initial setup and updates. That way, he can open the system and get right to playing. However, I soon found that looks are deceiving. Shortly after hooking everything up, I turn the system on and.....nothing. No video signal is being transmitted. The light appears solid blue, the input is correct, and the disc light is on for some reason. Troubleshooting begins.

First, I try swapping the HDMI cable that came with the Wii U with another. No changes. Next, I tried using the power supply that I use for my Wii U. Again, no changes. I tried a different HDMI port. Still nothing. So my wife and I turn to Google in search of answers. The only thing I hadn't tried was using Wii composite/component cables; both of which were missing from my house. My mother in the next town has a Wii, so we packed the system up to test the next day.

My Wii U worked fine when I plugged everything back in, so there's nothing wrong with my jacks or other equipment. I tested Mario Kart 8 and Nintendoland before putting the refurb back in the box. Both games worked. They're indistinguishable from new copies, aside from the red refurbished label on Mario Kart.

The following day I venture over to my mother's to see if I can get the Wii U to do something. I'm met with the same, disappointing "No Signal" box. I'm out of options, I have to call Nintendo. At this point, I would have been willing to just run out and buy a new Wii U if Nintendo would give me a refund. However, you can't get a refund for a refurbished product. Nintendo will repair or replace, but they won't refund you. Even if it's DOA.

I went through all the things that I already did with the tech so that we don't have to repeat anything. We didn't have to do any additional tests. I did everything there was to do and a little more since I had a spare power supply. The system will be sent in for repair soon at no cost. I might get it, or a replacement in a week. Awesome.

On the box for these things, it says Cleaned, Tested, and Inspected. Bullshit. Cleaned, definitely. I can't knock it for how clean the system is. This thing couldn't have been tested, though. There's no way. No video signal is a glaring problem that should have been picked up in either testing or inspection. It's unacceptable.

I have never received a DOA Nintendo product before. It's another blow to my confidence in the company, which I had associated with reliable products. Hopefully the replacement/repair works. It's already going to miss the birthday.

If you feel the games justify it, buy one new at retail. There are plenty of good holiday deals out there. If the one you buy at retail is faulty, at least you can bring it back immediately and get an exchange. Don't buy the system refurbished.

huh. Well instead of sending off my gamepad for repairs I think I'll order some screw drivers and fix it myself. I'm not gonna go for that. Especially since they said that I'd need to pay $99 to fix a analog stick.

Good idea. $99 is ridiculous. You can get the analog stick part for cheap. To open the Gamepad, you'll need a tri-wing screwdriver, like one you would use to open a Gamecube controller. If I could find the link to one that I bought, I would post it.

I remember my Wii got the green-pixels of death 3 months in. Luckily I live in Vancouver, and Nintendo of Canada is here. I rolled in on foot, and walked out with a refurb that never died. It was convenient.

@YearoftheSnake5: Nice, that was fast. As you can see they sent you the same system repaired. So it makes one wonder, where do all the refurbished systems come from? Dun, dun, dun...

Got the Wii U back from United Radio. The first thing I notice is that the box is smaller than what I sent in. That's because instead of repackaging the Wii U in the box it came in, they wrapped the system, Gamepad, and the cables/game separately.

After unpackaging everything, I notice the paperwork that came with it the first time is missing. Next, the system is filthy. It looks like they wiped it down with a used dish rag; which would explain all the new scratches. Quality. The important question is, does it work?

And the answer is yes. The Gamepad was already synced and the OS was fully updated. Setup was quick and easy. All I had to do was put the games in for updates, wipe everything down, and it's good to go.

According to the repair notes, they replaced the PCB. I'm just glad the damn thing works.

It's illegal. Nintendo doesn't do that. He's confusing common sense with nonsense.

It sure sounds like such a practice would violate an agreement between Nintendo and retailers because I'm sure contracts of some sort were signed.

You got it right. A third party, such as United Radio Inc, handle the refurb/repair process, though. In my case, they obviously didn't bother to test it.

@tiny_rick: Thats why Nintendo doesnt advertise them to the public as brand new consoles turned to refurbished. Nintendo needs retailers. You just have to use common sense and put the pieces together. Either they are brand new consoles repackages as refurbished, or Nintendo some how magically has a nice supply of used consoles and games that they repaired and replaced the repaired consoles and games with brand new consoles and games.

I dunno, seems kinda like speculation on your part there. If Nintendo were selling new consoles under a refurb title on their store to avoid retailers getting angry, wouldnt people just get the refurbs instead of the retail and make retailers mad still? Also refurbs arent as plentiful as I think you are making it and they might just be adding bundle stuff to intice people

They cant sell it brand new, retailers would have a fit and not order stuff from them. So only way for Nintendo to get around it is to open the merchandise and repackage it as refurbished. This way, Nintendo can sell it at profit at a price they deem fair. Those refurbished prices, Nintendo is making profit on them. But to retailers its not enough for them to get a good cut.

@tiny_rick: Yeah, im afraid not that many people bought a Wii U to refurbish that many. This is only way they can sell them for cheap and not make retailers angry. Also when you have a broken system, they will send you back the same system fixed. They dont take your broken system and return you a brand new one, its rare they do that.

He bought a used dud, DoA is common in electronics. Why? Cause Nintendo doesnt test them out. Refurbs are broken consoles that were returned to Nintendo. They take these back and try to fix them so they can try to salvage the system and then sell it back. Nintendo isnt trying to bypass anything... To say they throw new consoles into a refurb category and they arrive DoA is actually pretty terrible...

lol, irony is funny

I like messin with Jayson, we are homeboys. So many people in Playstaion Nation having issues with their systems and everyone just turns a blind eye. Even my PS3 bluray just crapped out and refuses to play dvds now. Its just make loud noise and wont read. But it plays games fine. Which is funny cause i never play movies in the thing.

Every single Playstation i have ever owned has had the same exact problems, drive problems. My PS1 had to be stood on its side to read discs after awhile of owning, my PS2 had to get a whole new drive cause it wouldnt read the newer games, and then my PS3 bluray drive or laser or whatever crapped out. Either ive got super bad luck, or Sony just dont give a damn about quality.

I even had issue with my Xbox 360, but that was my fault cause i bought it used and didnt know it had a custom RRoD fix done, so it crapped out and did the same to me after a few weeks. Nintendo consoles are the only system i have never had an issue with so far. Except my old Nunchuk, it would go crazy sometimes and move on its own, so i got me a new one.

Exactly

Nintendo doesn't care enough to do it themselves. They hired literally the lowest priced third party to handle this and their quality shows.

They extended their "warranty" on refurb units because they're still broken after the second and sometimes third try at fixing them.

Their materials are shoddy, even though the original components are crap the ones they replace them with are even lower quality.

Anyone who recommends refurbished anything from Nintendo really hates the people they're recommending to.

Bottom line....

No one who has your best interest in mind recommends a refurbished Nintendo product.

That sucks. Nintendo still has the most endurable hardware of the console companies despite you being unlucky, though.

I once had a broken Wii (launch one). I sent it in, then they sent it back to me 3 weeks later (and I was waiting to finally be able to continue playing Zelda: TP) with the message "there's nothing wrong with it". I became furious. Then I had to show the store I bought it from the fucking problem myself, since the troubleshooters were retarded. Send it in again would take another 3 weeks. Nintendo fixed it this time, and they also sent me a new controller for free for the trouble. So I went from hating them to being happy with their service. Nintendo is good with these things, but sometimes you're just unlucky.

You can, Nintendo still has the best used warranty in the gaming industry and the best success rate with hardware failure problems. Its a brand you can trust. People would kill for a 12 month refurbished warranty protection.

Even if you buy brand new you cant get refund on opened merchandise, its the standard with electronics.

Its cool they are fixing it for free, Nintendo has the longest lasting refurbished warranty in the industry, but sucks its was DoA. I always like buying used stuff from them. So when you bought Mario Kart 8 used it had the refurbished label in red printed on the cover art? I thought it was just a sticker on the plastic or something.
