YoBrandino Blog

Year 30

Turned 30 last month. Kinda feel like that should be the level cap or something, lol. Naw, all is good. Also notice I've been a Gamespot member since Nov 2003 so that will be 10 years come Nov. Crazy.

Anyways, up to the same old stuff.

I hadn't been watching much anime lately. Last I was trying to get through Clannad but eventually stopped. It was ok. But recently I've been trying to re-acquaint my self. I tired a few things here or there but didn't really stick past an episode or two. Watched a season of Baka & Test and really liked it. Then watched first season of Sekirei and really really liked. Then watched Eden of the East and two of the movies so far. Pretty good too. A friend lent me Death Note and so I will give that a try now.

I had only dabbled in a volume of manga here or there before but since getting my iPad, I have been majorly reading comic books. I love reading them on the iPad and signed up for Marvel Unlimited (great deal)! Then on the manga side, I just started reading Fairy Tale and while I'm only a few chapters in, its been great. I plan to stick it out along with Blue Exorcist.

On the video game front, I've been a little sporatic. Was playign Ni No Kuni (PS3) but then diverted to White Knight Chonicles (PS3) and then diverted to Infinate Undiscovery (360). Still been trying to get back to one of those and Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS). Also playing Final Fantasy: Dimensions (iPad) and just started Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the iPad too. So, all over the place and need to get some focus back.

For audiobooks, I've been mostly focusing on Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones). Great reads and a great show too. I'm on the third book but have been filling in a few books in between each one like Wizard of Earthsea and the last of the Sookie Stackhouse books (not quite worth sticking the series out but a few good books were in there).

What else do I do? Watch TV and movies. TV is currently, Dexter, Falling Skies, True Blood.. Definace (eh) just ended and don't know if I'll keep on with Under the Dome but we'll see.

Well I guess that's all I got - my entertainment update I suppose. I'm gonna try and find a really good anime and manga to get into so I'll look for some good recommendations.

So much excitement!

With so much anticipation on so many things, all is coming to fruition.

First and foremost, as I have mentioned, I am a huge fan of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time book series and love that Brandon Sanderson has been finishing the series as I now love Sanderson's others works. But alas, the final book in the series has now been released and I am currently making my way through it. As the 14th main book in the series (plus one prequel novel), every word I read brings new excitement.

Ni No KuniFire Emblem

Then, my two most anticipated games, pretty much ever, will be coming out soon. First, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3) is coming out this month, I had preordered the Wizard's Edition and since then been avoiding any info on the game. I simply cannot wait to receive it and dive in to all its glory. The second game is Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS), which is my favorite series and this entry looks to be awesome!

As I said in my last blob like six month ago, I had dropped upgrading my 3DS to an XL since I got the 3D TV (which I still LOVE!). I did end up trading in my 3DS for a nice large 3DS XL. Bigger is better. So, I am all ready for Fire Emblem now!

Also, to follow-up on my last blog, I have now finished all six books in the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher and they were great. So, then I moved onto his other series, The Dresden Files. I read the first book, and it was ok. Ill probably read a couple more in the series to see if they pull me in more or not. And of course now I am reading A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson as the final book and conclusion to the amazing Wheel of Time series!

On the video game front, I have been playing Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3. I really like it, but have been making slow progress. And on handhelds I have started playing The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks; it is good but it doesnt have the great Zelda feel for me. And a lot of time has been taken up on my new iPad. It has some good games and I am playing Orc: Vengeance now, but I spend a lot of time on board game and card game adaptations like War on Terror, Ascension, etc, etc, etc.

Then for viewing experiences, I watched the first four seasons on Breaking Bad, and WOW! Its that good. Also went and saw an early preview of Warm Bodies and quite enjoyed it. Then, I plan on getting back into watching Bleach as I really want to and just need to find the time.

New Toys! Weeeeeeee!!

So, I had the 3DS XL all preorded and was excited about the big screen! But then...

I went and replaced myu 40" 720p HDTV and got a 55" 1080p Smart 3D TV (LG- Passive 3D). And OH! is it AWESOME!

And to go with that, I got a PS3. I could justify it now with the new TV and to use as a Blu Ray/3D Blu Ray player as well. Plus, 3D games!

OMG! I love it!

I already watched How to Train Your Dragon in 3D like 3 times this week. Haha, great movie!

Valkyria Chronicles

I got the Prince of Persia 3D Trilogy to check out the 3D game. But more exciting is that I have Valkyria Chonicles on its way in the mail, whoo hoo!! Also on its way is 3D Dot Heroes sicne I think it looks pretty cool.

Thus, cancelled my 3DS XL preorder and will live with my standard 3DS for now. But I did just get Pokemon Conquest (DS) finally and Mario Kart 7 (3DS), but really have only been playing some Mario Kart lately.

On other notes....

I finished reading Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings. Byt the end I was blown away with awesomness and certainly can not wait for the continuation of the series. Currently reading Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series - Book one - Furies of Calderon. It is really good too. I love me some good audiobooks!

I have been starting to watch some anime again. Specifically, Full Metal Panic.. slowly, but its enjoyable enough. But I need to get back to Bleach since it has been way to long... not sure where I left off...

Any ways, WHOO HOOO!! 3D TV!!!

Hellooo... mailbox!

Today's a fun day for the mail. My Xenoblade Chronicels (Wii) arrived... hooray! Plus in came Catherine (360) and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2 (DS). Very exciting! I can't wait to get home and try them out.

Well, first I will have to play Devil Survivor: Overclocked (3DS) before Devil Survivor 2, but I really liked what I had played so far of the first one so it justified to go ahead and get the second one. Though I did break my rule of not getting sequels until I finish the previous game. But I figured it would probably be my last DS game, so said why not.

Pokemon Conquest

But that was wrong, because I will certainly be getting Pokemon Conquest! This game just seems so beyond awesome to me! I have a light love of Pokemon and a growing love of historical figures thanks to Samurai Warriors Chronicles (3DS).

I have also just downloaded Nobunaga's Ambition on my iPhone. The game is enjoyable, but I don't really know what to do yet. I fail miserably. Though its still fun, it will take me time to figure it out I think. Anyways, if you want iPhone game suggestions, there really are some great ones. First off is the free version of Dominion by Donald X. Vaccarino. Its a great version of the deck building card game. Its one of my new favorite games and you can't go wrong with this iPhone version since it is free. I also recommend Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride Pocket if you like those games. But the game I have been having alot of fun with lately on the iPhone is called Squids. There are four different cIassed of squids which you increase there stats and play through stages shooting your Squids into enemies to damage them and maneuvering your way to the goal. Check it out.

Dynasty Warriors 7

And to continue on the Warriors route, I have been playing Dynasty Warriors 7 (360) and am surprised at how good the story telling in it is. Really strikes hard with the emotion. Plus I just really enjoy the game play. Can't wait for an Empires version though. I really liked what I saw in DW 5 Empires, but want something more modern to sink into. But now I am trying to decide which Samurai Warriors games to get - I played Chronicles on the 3DS, but am torn between SW 3 on the Wii or SW 2 on the 360 (which I would also get SW 2 Empires too), I'm just not sure how dated 2 will feel on the 360 or how well 3 plays on the Wii.

Other games I'm playing include Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS). This game has charm, but its not drawing me in. The one word I would use to describe the game is chaotic. The game play is just a little much for me with the controls and controlling Pit on the ground. Then the story elements take place on the bottom screen while I'm trying to keep up the game on the top screen. So, I'm personally a little let down but I can't deny it is fun. Just don't know if I will stick it out or give up... my gaming time is very precious after all - so many games, so little time. I did finish The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and while it didn't spark me like Windwaker had, it was certainly great! I may or may not pump out a review; eh, most likely not at this point.

Mistborn Birthright

In other news, I finished the (audio)books Mistborn: Alloy of Law and Elantris both by Brandon Sanderson. I loved the original Mistborn Trilogy so much, and this follow-up book was just ok. Elantis was really really good though. And I am currently listening to another of his books, Warbreaker. It is interesting but not as good as Mistborn Trilogy or Elantris, at least not yet. And I am certainly looking forward to the upcoming Mistborn video game, Mistborn: Birthright.

I am also attending my fisr convention(s) this year. First off, on my way down to Florida for a Carribean Cruise Vacation ina couple weeks, I will be stopping by JordanCon in Atlanta, GA (The Wheel of Time convention). Then in August it looks like I'll be heading to GenCon in Indianapolis for a day, to check it out finally and at least get Brandon Sanderson's autograph on a book. Then later in August, I'll be headed back to Atlanta, GA with a friend for Dragon*Con. So, looking forward to checking out these conventions finally. And think I may do a day in cos-play at Dragon*Con as Dr. Horrible. So, that should be fun.

Samurai!

While I am still playing through Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS). I have been highly engrossed in the offerings the the 3DS eShop lately. After falling in love with Pushmo, I have been spending large amounts of time with Dillon's Rolling Western and Sakura Samurai. Anyone with a 3DS should certainly download these three games. Dillon's Rolling Western is very active game and its pure fun to control Dillon's rolling abouts with the touch screen. There is more action than tower defense here, so that was good for me. But those towers sure can help. Next was Sakura Samurai. I started off a little mixed on this one, but now I just want more. So, here is my Sakura Samurai Review.

Sakura Samurai

I picked up Tales of the Abyss for the 3DS. I had it for the PS2 but hadn't finished it, so I look forward to finally playing it all the way through on the 3DS. Also looking forward to getting my preorders for Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) and Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS) when they come out in the next month or so. I also put in my preorder for The Last Story (Wii), so yay!

It has been awhile now since I finished the last Wheel of Time book, and the next and final one have been pushed back from November this year to January next year now. The anticipation is killing me, but my connection to the series has died down a little with being away from it. So, I'll probably have to hit a couple of the books up again between now and then. Anyways, I just read the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson (who is the one finishing the Wheel of Time series for the late Robert Jordan). The Mistborn Trilogy was AWESOME! I ended up absolutely loving these books. The characters, unpredictable twists and turn, and good characters really drew me in kept me completely entranced. The changes and plot growth throughout the books is just amazing. So much intrigue and questions to get answered all come together for a wonderful ending. I'm not a big crier, but this series actually brought tears to my eyes on two occasions. With themes of slavery, revolutions, war, religion,c1ass, and fantasy, Brandon Sanderson has scripted a very unique world. Some characters are blessed with powers deriving from metals and as you progress you will learn of other types of powers too. I don't want to give anything away, so you will just have to read them for yourselves. And I highly recommend that you do. You will not regret following these characters and the story from beginning to end.

Mistborn

While the Mistborn Trilogy was superb, there is now a fouth book. This book takes place in the same world but 300 years later. So it is now a direct continution of the same characters, but it expands on the world in new ways. I am only a few chapters in and don't think it will captivate me like the first three books, but I am certainly looking forward to reading more.

Zelda, Zelda, Fire!

Ocarina of Time 3D

Finished The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS. So, this is my first time actually finishing this game. I remember playing it a little when I was young at a friend's house or something, and then I've played a fair bit of it on the collector's disc for the GameCube, but had never actually finished it. But now I have :) So, here is my The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D review.

Skyward Sword

So, I am now onto The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. So, far I absolutely love it! My favorite Zelda game was Windwaker, but this just may take the cake. Though there are still tons of Zelda games I've yet to get to playing. Anyways I have finished Windwaker (GC), The Minish Cap (GBA), Phantom Hourglass (DS), Twilight Princess (Wii), and now Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS). I have played others but don't recall every actually finishing them... yet.

Shadow Dragon

I also started playing Chrono Trigger on the DS and its great, but since I am having Fire Emblem withdraw (lol), I may break and switch to Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS) and then back to Chrono Trigger. Ps. I certainly can not wait for the new Fire Emblem on the 3DS... so excited!!! So, yeah, basically my favorite series is Fire Emblem, and second would be The Legend of Zelda. Therefore, I love this...

YoBrandino's October Entertaiment Updates

Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

First and foremost, we will discuss my current participation in the world of video games. Having come to end of my time with Pokemon Black (DS), I was once again able to return to the games it interrupted. And thus I attempted more of Magna Carta: Tears of Blood (PS2) and I tried harder and harder to really get into it. But alas, I decided it was wasting my time and I had many other games I would rather spend my time with. And so, after 60 or so hours in, I decided to just give up as it was not a good enough game to keep me playing. So, I moved on to play Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn on the Wii. Now, Fire Emblem is probably my favorite video game series, and I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to playing Radiant Dawn, but I'm glad I finally did. So, in 58 hours that felt like a blink of the eye, I finished the game. It was Fire Emblem, so I loved it. While I felt it was one of the weaker games in the series, I really enjoyed the story and the further exploration of the world of Tellius from Path of Radiance on the GameCube. I certainly plan to replay both these games again and take advantage of transfering character data for stat bonuses next time. And thus, here is my Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn review.

And now I have just started with Shin Megami Tensai - Digital Devil Saga (PS2). I have been on the fence with SMT games. I played a good amount of Nocturn, but i honestly ended up boring me to death that I quit. I also gave up on the Devil Summoner series, though maybe too quickly. Thus far, I am really enjoying Digital Devil Saga and can't wait to play more.

On the handheld side, I have yet to get back into The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) since finishing Pokemon. But I play to get back into playing it tonight hopefully.

Ringer

Moving on to the world of television and movies, Dexter has returned and it's a bit crazy this season. The preview for next week's episode looked absolutely over the top. I. Can't. Wait. It's not the strongest of season yet, but that can change. But next episode looks to be awesome incarnate. Other shows, hmm.. kinda watching that Terra Nova show on Fox, but I dunno. It's fun enough for now, so we'll see. Then Tuesday's are packed with the comedy of Glee, New Girl, and Raising Hope. And on top of the, the new Sarah Michelle Geller show, Ringer. I gave it a shot, just to see. But I am really enjoying it. The premise is a little odd, but it's working to make a great show.

Melancholia

Well, I watch a lot of movies, but there have been two stand-out movies recently that I will touch on. The first one is Stay. It is from 2005 and has Ewan McGregor, Ryan Gosling, Naomi Watts. This movie really resonated with me, I enjoyed everything throughout the movie and the ending came together beautifully. You should watch it, so I won't say much. But I thought it was excellently done. The other movie is one I just watched the other night and it is called Melancholia. It stars Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The synopsis is: two sisters find their already strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide into the Earth. The movie focuses on these sisters and one's fallings of deep depression and the others paranoid breaking the face of disaster. The end of the world is really a side aspect, which is a beautiful change. But this moving is powerful. You will walk away felling down, but I sure hope you'll enjoy the raw beauty that I did.

The Gathering Storm

And finally, we will end with books (or audio books as I prefer). As I have mentioned many times, I am reading the Wheel of Time series, and it is the best thing in the world. I am now on book 12, The Gathering Storm. And as I have said with almost every book in the series, this is my favorite one yet! But really I think this one will be my most favorite maybe. I have just a few chapters left. Then I will start on book 13, and then will have to wait until the final book is released. But they have just announced that it will come out in November 2012. However, I really need to figure out how I will fill this void in the meantime though...

It's a Pokemon takeover!

Now that I have been playing Pokemon Black, I can't seem to put it down to play any other games. Again, this is the first Pokemon game that I have actually stuck with and played. And I am loving it. I had finished the main story and then pow! Just so much content here that I don't know when I'll ever be done with it. I keep wanting to take a break to play something else and then come back. But alas, I just keep playing. Plus, we just picked up Pokemon White for my boyfriend, and thus all we have been doing is sitting around playing Pokemon. Can't wait until he's further along so we can start tading and all. And so here is my Pokemon Black review.

Pokemon Black Pokemon White

Anyways, it feels like I have been watching alot of TV later, which isn't really the norm. But with Torchwood: Miracle Day, True Blood, and Falling Skies all on right now it just feels like overload. Not to mention those darn reality TV shows that grab you in sometime whether you want them to or not. Sothat includes Hell's Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance, and some design show. But Torchwood: Miracle Day has been a very pleasant surprise. I have always like Torchwood as an extentnsion on my absolute love for Doctor Who. But its never been my most favorite. But this season has just been awesomely different. Way to go Torchwood!

Thus, I have been finding little time to fit in episodes of Bleach. I've just watched a handful more and am liking it more and more though. I have that feeling that this will be one of my favorites. Heck, I already consider it one.I had checked out some of the Bleach video games, even though I'm not usually a fan of these licensed type games. And since most of them are just fighters anyways, I have no interest. But the DS game The 3rd Phantom seemed right up my alley, so I went ahead and bought it from Glyde.com. And then Bleach: Soul Ressureccion just came out on the PS3 and I must say that it looks mighty awesome to me.

Bleach: Soul Resurreccion

But, I have no PS3. I really want to get one, but I still just can't justify it. Maybe if I had all kinds of excess funds, but without that and already having a 360, it just doesn't work out for me. Anyways, I'd really only be buying it for Valkyria Chronicles and now Bleach: Soul Ressureccion. Well, also Tales of Graced F when it comes out. And of couse a few other games, but just a small handful, but those three are the top of my PS3 list that I can't get on the 360.

Man, I wish I really could just splurge and get a PS3, and nice shiny 3D TV. I love 3D, love my 3DS and really want a 3D TV. And a PS3 and 3D TV are good pair. Oh, someday.

And finally, I finished the prequal book to the Wheel of Time series, New Spring. I really enjoyed it. I wasn't initially sure about diverting from the series to read a prequal, but it was most satisfying. But now I'm back into the main series, and goodness I just love this book series so much. I'm in the 11th book, Knife of Dreams. Just a few chapters in, but starting to get all panicky since there are only 3 books left after this one. Oh no! I seriously don't know what I"ll do with myself when this is over.

Knife of Dreams

So, if you haven't read the Wheel of Time series. I highly suggest you do. They are the best books in the world, with out a doubt. I gaurantee!!

Before June ends

Well, I didn't get a blog done in May, and so here's a last minute one before June is over.

I'm still trying to get around to writing up reviews for Dante's Inferno (360) and Batman: Arkham Asylum (360). Maybe I'll find the motivation soon. But, in the meantime, I did come to an end to my time with Samurai Warriors: Chronicles (3DS). I very much enjoyed my 90+ hours with the game. But with so much to play, I finally had to just move on. I finished the game enough for my satisfaction, but did not finish leveling up friendship or getting any 4th weapons. I did find a little motivation and so here is my Samurai Warriors: Chronicles review.

After finishing Samurai Warriors: Chronicles up, I moved right back playing Magna Carta: Tears of Blood (PS2) and Final Fantasy VII (PSN/PSP). I'm liking Magna Carta more and more, but it simply a good game and nothing great. I like Final Fantasy VII, but it just isn't grabbing me to come back an play. I will, and maybe it will draw me in more later.

Ocarina of Time 3D

But then I did a bunch of trade-ins on games that hadn't been selling online and got The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3d (3DS). So, that started taking up my gaming time. I've played a bit of it on the GameCube Collector's Disk before, but never had finished. So, I look forward to finally playing through the whole game on the 3DS.

I'm also getting into my first Pokemon game. I have tried to play a couple over the years, but never got into any of them. I've always liked Pokemon overall a little, but just not the games too much. But with the Pokedex 3D on the 3DS, I was really enjoying getting new Pokemon each day. And since I talked about it so much, lol, I got Pokemon Black as a gift on birthday earlier this week. And now that is taking up most of my gaming time. Just wish I had even more time.

Bleach

In other news, I started watching the anime, Bleach. I lost interenst in the last anime I tried, Kaze no Stigma. But Bleach is pretty interesting and seems to have good potential. There are tons of episodes, so hopefully it'll hold my attention and I'll stick with it.

I'm also well into the 10th book of The Wheel of Time series. I can't believe there are only a few books left now. I don't know what I'll do when it's over. I love this series to death. I don't have much patience for actually reading, but I listen to lots of audiobooks. But I really think that after I finish listening to this series on audio, that I will start back over from the beginning and actually read the books.
