Am I the only one that hates this kind of 3D style?
What's so bad about isometric, huh? Baldur's Gate, Diablo I & II, Starcraft, Icewind Dale, all these games had beautiful, extremely detailed artwork, and weren't in 3D. The backgrounds and the sprites looked great, and still do.
I'm not complaining about all 3D. 3D is great. It's amazing. Gears of War and Bioshiock and all those other high quality 3D games out there have showed us that. But it's this certain style of 3D that I hate. Diablo was such a dark, gothic, cataclysmic game, and the art greatly reflected that. This **** wasn't for pre-teens--though they played it anyway.
Are ball and chains really hanging from that Gorebelly's nipples? **** yes they are. Is that blood bubbling from the floors of Andariel's Lair? You bet your lunch money it is. Are those corpses impaled on stakes in the ground? Yupp. Cut 'em down and search them for loot! This stuff was so dark, and painstakingly hand drawn detailed that it made you creeped out the first time you saw it. Now, they're substituting this personal touch with cut and paste textures. **** this ****
Now let's look at the screenshots for Diablo III (and even Starcraft II). It's in 3D, but it just looks so kiddie and tame compared to the former Diablo II's look. Everything's got oversized legs or arms or heads, or something to make it look a little cartoonish. Where are my downright evil looking enemy sprites? All I see are lame skeletons and zombies and stuff. Nothing is scary, nothing inspires the same kind of emotion that D2's graphics did. I even prefer the first Diablo's graphics to what I'm seeing in the screenshots. And you know what? This style is hugely generic. In fact these screenshots look like they could've come straight from Dungeon Runners or Mythos or Titan Quest. They look like WoW, or Warcraft, or NWN (not NWN2), or any other 3D game that has you focused on tiny characters running around. Go ahead and take a look at Screenshot 14 of Gamespot's D3 screens. See that ghost of the Witch Doctor? That's cool. Now just make the rest of the game that same style. I do admit that the backgrounds look pretty decent, except most of the underground 3D pillars, which still have the same generic 3D look. And that giant boss-beast thing doesn't look cartoonish or kiddie.
I realize I'm probably the only person that feels this way. And it's my opinion. If you like this **** that's fine, I've got no beef with you. I just wanted to rant and complain about, what I feel, is a horrible art ****mistake.
