I played GW since the Alpha (yeah, with the wowish graphics) and it WAS an amazing game up untill Nightfall. I've never played a more challanging MMO. I've only been through Hyjal in WoW, but I felt like all the GW missions were, at least, around Kara. level if done at proper level and gear. This created a very fun and intricate group experience in PvE where you were basically raiding every mission (and they could take up to three hours, especially the later ones like the ring) [SIDE NOTE: to anyone that wants to say 'lol, missionz r ezy' allow me to clarify that I am talking about the game's start when people couldn't use some of the upgrades they can now].
This, however, doesn't exist in the game anymore. With heros and 'better' henchies you'll be playing a single player game with an intricate chat room. The more challanging missions require cookie-cutter builds, so if you roll a class you think is fun but doesn't fit into the mold you're screwed.
There is no real gear progression. I beat nightfall with my paragon without the max armor, so you can see gear doens't make a huge difference. There are a ton of skins but no stat. upgrades. This creates a 'skill' based environment (though, arguably, an environment of who can follow pre-written wiki steps) but leaves very little to work for if you don't care about slight and, in my opinion, unimpressive visual upgrades.
The game is definetly worth a shot for the experience but I wouldn't expect to get absorbed in it.

I'm playing The Witcher right now, and it's one of the best RPGs I've played in awhile, but I don't know ... I feel like it's been a long time since I played an RPG that really chased me around all day, where I caught myself thinking about it when I wasn't playing it (work, dinner table, etc.). I feel like you have to go back a few years to find that kind of game, hence my question about the older Diablo series.
I remember a few years back being in church on a Sunday with my wife and child, and when I looked up, everyone in the pews in front of me had little status indicator circles over their heads like the enemies do in Wizardry 8. I'd just finished a W8 marathon the night before. I agree it's probably not a good thing, but it's been awhile since I've been that into a game, and I kind of miss it.
Anyway, I appreciate all the comments. It sounds like D2 isn't very plot-driven, but all the customization and the skill trees sound interesting enough that I might check it out.
Diablo 2 was my introduction into online gaming, and I've never looked back. If you're looking for the type of gameplay you described with W8, then D2 is definetly for you. I've been known to play that game for up to twenty hours... :(I just got a 360 yesterday as well, and I have to say I am not at all dissapointed. I bought the new package with the two free games and Halo 3 and all of them are simply amazingly stunning. I do, however, live in fear of the red rings -_-. I read your post and ran to place my 360 horizontaly, was that a good thing?
I also messed up with the XBL trial. I gave them my CC because I thought my free month of gold would start regardless, so I paid for the first month and never got it free :( . I sent Microsoft an e-mail, I am hoping they will help me fix this.
Ultimately, it is an amazing counsole. I wish I had not trash talked about it so much when it was released. I am here, eating my words.
