Wow! I can't believe we're already half way through 2010. That means it's been a full six months since I picked up my Super Nintendo console. I started off with 3 games, but my collection has steadily and obsessively grown to 40 awesome carts. Check out my collection, it's right here on Gamespot. Anyway, this is in fact my very first Super Nintendo console. We had one when I was a kid but it was my sister's. (I had a Sega Genesis.) Back then there would have been no way to afford 40 games. And who in their right mind would buy 40 PS3 or Xbox360 games? The beauty of getting back into an older system is that you can finally afford every game you ever wanted because most are 10 to 15 bucks or less. Not only that, the games are MORE FUN than modern, realistic, Xbox360 and PS3 titles.

Anyway, lets talk about the history of video gaming. This topic is perfect for the SNES Old-School. Let's begin with a narrative about the old days. I started gaming in good ol' 1987. Man, I cannot believe it's been 23 years!! Well it wouldn't take a genius to figure out that it all started with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I wanted a Nintendo SO BAD, but we were broke back then. I wanted the thing for like a year, and finally my mom told me that if I got good enough grades in school (2nd grade) she would consider it. And I can still remember the day we brought it home from K-Mart. My first game was Mario/Duck Hunt, because it came with the console. The first one I picked myself was Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link. Personally I really liked that game even though most Zelda fans hate it. I remember my cartridge had a glitch in it though - I definitely had obtained all 6 crystals, but the 'Binding Force' was still there at the end. Thus, I never even got the chance to enter the 7th and final palace. To this day I still have never beaten it. I even called the Nintendo hotline and they told me, "Sorry, you must have a faulty copy." I remember this other time I sold ALL my games in order to buy Super Mario 3. When that game came out it changed us all forever. I was totally geeked. I even brought it to school one time just a few days after I got it. When our class came back from recess (yes we still had recess at school), someone had stolen it right out of my desk. (I'll see you in hell) I was completely heart broken and cried my little eyes out. The teacher even let me go home early for the day. I think that incident permanently affected the way I perceive human nature. But I bounced back from it, and over the years my love for gaming has continued to flourish. *Some other NES games that I have fond, fond memories of: Jordan versus Bird, Predator, T&C Surf, Pictionary, Double Dragon, Guerilla Wars, Super Mario 2 and 3, Mike Tyson's Punch-out, Duck Tales.

After all that nostalgia about the NES, you will be amused to hear how callously I turned my back on Nintendo in favor of the Sega Genesis in the next round of console wars. Sonic the Hedgehog blew my mind as a kid. I loved that game, and got the system almost immediately after it came out. Part of the reason for the switch was the Genesis was just more affordable than the SNES. At the time the SNES had a pretty hefty price tag on it - at least $300. But I loved Sonic so much that I even remember painting his image on the side of my T.V. stand, complete with an anti-Nintendo message. I think it said "Nintendo Rules - NOT!" Wow, in retrospect that was quite lame. I think I must have been in a Wayne's World phase at the time. Ha ha ha, those were the good old days my friends. *Other Genesis games that I remember loving: Sonic the Hedgehog2, Ecco the Dolphin, Toe Jam and Earl.

Over the years I went through some systems - Sega Saturn (sucked), Dreamcast (hammer fist broke it to bits), Playstation (got stolen), PS2 (riddled with problems), X-box (solid), X360 (red ring of death).

When I picked up my first Super Nintendo six months ago, I had no idea that I was buying THE BEST CONSOLE EVER MADE. 40 games and 6 months later, I'm still hell-bent on which games to get next. I even sold my Xbox360 so I could afford more and more SNES carts for my collection. I've never had a collection like this in my life, and I'm a grown man feeling like a kid at heart, the kid I've always been.

Recently I've re-discovered the glory of the Super Nintendo. I actually picked-up a used SNES for $40. Best move I've ever made video-game-wise. So far I have Zelda Link to the Past, Super Mario All-stars, and Tecmo Super Bowl. I got 2 controllers as well and it all cost me about $120. I've been reading about which games are the best of all time for the Super Nintendo. So I just ordered 4 used games on-line. Actraiser, Shadowrun, Soul Blazer, and Secret of Mana. I also plan to pick-up Super Castlevania IV. I believe that the newvideo game systemsare visually amazing, but the games have become almost too realistic for me. I just cannot stop playing the retro games for the SNES. Happy New Year!!
