Top 10 Games

What follows here is my most exclusive list of all. This list is comprised of the top 10 of my favorite games. Only 2 rules apply for admission into this list.

1. The game MUST be on my Games That I Have Beaten List. Hence why THIS list is extremely hard to get on.

2. To move into the Top 10, I have to look at the recently beaten game and think "Given the choice, would I rather play this game, or at least my 10th-ranked game?" If I would play the new game, then it moves in.

Alrighty, enough jibber jabber. TO THE LIST (from 10-1)*

10. Zelda: Minish Cap

9. Legend of Zelda (original)

8. Super Mario Bros (original)

7. Zelda: Wind Waker

6. Super Mario 64

5. Final Fantasy 7

4. Resident Evil 4

3. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Se7en Stars

2. Metroid Prime

1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time

*this list is, of course, subject to change

Completing the Circle

I was born in '87, and for as long as I can possibly remember, I've had an NES. I had many games for it, but only two that were of any quality at all: Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda. Considering how young I was at the time, both these games were ridiculously hard for me. I remember getting as far as World 8-2 and dying, only to have some neighbor kid lie and tell me that there were 100 WORLDS total in the game, and my heart sank. I could never beat that many worlds, so I gave up on the game. I didnt understand Zelda at all: the idea that 8 dungeons were scattered around that big map was absolutely beyond my comprehension. I'd get the first triforce shard, then think, OK, now what? Because of this, my interest in video games was mediocre at best. I never asked for any new games because I always assumed that mom and dad would say no. "Don't you have enough games already?" So, I moved onto this nifty little handheld. And no, it wasn't even the popular one.

The SEGA Gamegear. I loved this little thing. All those Nintendo people could play their game boys with their green screens. I had COLOR. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Triple Trouble were my favorite games for that system...plus a bunch of crappy Power Rangers fighting games (THOSE were the days...) After a while, the Pokemon craze hit the world, and I got sucked in, got a red Gameboy pocket for christmas, and had a blast on pokemon. Let the record show that the first nintendo games I'd ever beaten were those pokemon games. Then, my brother's friend decided to spend the night once, and he brought with him a console.

A Playstation. He had Mortal Kombat, Parappa the Rapper and Crash Bandicoot. Being someone who had grown up used to seeing NES graphics my entire life, the 3d movement was only a full-force smack in the face. A pleasant smack, though. Enamored, my brother and I pleaded for one and it was thusly delivered. This was roughly the year 1998 (The Year of the Ocarina), and I wasn't paying any attention to the big popular video games. I knew Zelda was still around, I knew Mario was still kicking, but I was too afraid to see how these new games played out. My flawed logic was if I couldn't beat Mario on the NES, i couldnt DREAM of beating it on an N64. My Playstation went feverishly played (I never got the "good" games for it, the FF7s and the MGS's, I was too young). I constantly played Madden on it. I mean, hell, I was even cracking the horrible "Why do they call it Final Fantasy if there's more than one?" joke. I was the absolute classic definition of a noob. When the PS2 came out, it was only natural to make the jump from PS1 to PS2. And it was more of the same, more Madden, accidentally got MGS2 (which I played and never liked: i hate stealth LEVELS; a stealth GAME was ridiculous). Then I moved and befriended a lifelong Nintendo die-hard. We of course had our arguments ("Go play your cr@ppy violent video games!" "Oh, you playin Nintendo? Don't forget your pacifier.") Finally, I was at his house and he sat me down, plopped a SNES controller in my hand and said, "At least give it a shot." Probably the greatest thing anyone's ever done for me (video game-wise)

That game was Super Mario RPG. I loved it. My reaction surprised even my friend. I had the time of my life playing this game. I dreamed about it at nights. I would daydream about ways to beat that one particularly tough boss. I was HOOKED. No video game had ever done that to me before. Ever. I loyally kept playing my PS2, but got angry at the thought that "I could be playing SMRPG right now..." After eventually beating it, I was in limbo for a little bit. You know how it is when you've been focusing on one game for so long and so hard, and then you finally beat it, and you think WHOO HOO, I WON......now what? That was me. When I was over at his house, I went through his Gamecube collection and pulled out this one game with a familiar name on it. I asked my friend about it, and he told me it was "good."

This was Zelda: Ocarina of Time (The Master Quest disc). I won't go into detials about it because everyone knows what kind of game this is. Let's just say that, if SMRPG made me appreciate Nintendo, OoT made me get completely in its corner. A company that made a game this godly couldn't POSSIBLY be any bad. After OoT, I got a Gamecube, a DS, bought numerous games, and my shift was complete. I had become a Nintendo diehard. I still own my PS2, but that's only for select Square games that come out on the system (recently played FF7, just started Kingdom Hearts) and I, like any Nintendo fan, hope Square might someday forgive Nintendo for being such asses in the past and allow their games to be on our systems. Until then, I'm forced to keep my PS2 (planning on getting Kingdom Hearts II), but I won't be getting Kingdom Hearts III if it's on the PS3 (it will be). I'm getting the Revolution so I can make up for losing out on the SNES/N64 era completely and continue to play all the fantastic games that Nintendo keeps churning out for me.

For the record, while I was playing Ocarina of Time, I went back and played SMB and LoZ for my NES. Proceeded to kick the crap outta Bowser in SMB and I beat both (yes BOTH) quests in LoZ. I had come full circle.

Behold! This is my world renowned List of Games I Have Beaten. It is an extreme honor for any game to be on this list.
