So it happens all over again. Back in 1996, when I first heard about Blizzard's new project (Starcraft) I was amazed. Even if all we knew back then was that it was a sort of "Warcraft in space", even using Warcraft II's by then excellent engine (anyone remembers those old fashioned top-view screenshots we first got?).
In 1997, my dad was into an ISP business, so I had free Internet access 24/7. I even worked there as a support technician, so I didn't even had to connect using my phone line (oh, the old days when you actually needed a phone line!). I remember spending several hours a week doing my honest research on all things Starcraft, and when I first got the news that it was using a completely new engine, and three completely different races I just couldn't wait for it.
But then, as always, Blizzard promised the game to be out "when it's done". How naive we were back then not to know that Blizzard always releases one (and only one) game every year ('95: WCII, '96: WCII expansion, '97: Diablo... hence, '98: Starcraft), but I guess things were a bit different back then.
The reasons why I believe Starcraft is the best game ever are to be exposed at another time; however, I do believe that. So, even if we all knew Blizzard was cooking something, they weren't going with the 1 release per year anymore ('04: World of Warcraft, '05: nothing, '06: nada, 07: WoW Expansion, '08 and afterwards: ?), and even if we all, deep inside, knew the Starcraft franchise wasn't dead (not after the Ghost dropout... it couldn't be dead!), and even if we all wished for Starcraft II, not all of us actually expected such a big news.
So here we go again, waiting for a "when it's done" to happen, and no longer with the certainty that Blizzard releases 1 game a year. Oh, cruel destiny... could you please, please make it happen sometime in '08?
