Cool article! My job is a TV editor for shows like Masterchef, Amazing Race and Great Canadian Baking Show, and more often than not, if you try and re-invent the wheel with something new, it'll get shutdown. This is usually because there's a super tight deadline, and you just don't have time to try and do something new. Can't say if that's the case here, but it could be a factor.
I'm a big fan of movie trailers, and I've yawned over the past few years as well with these horror movies. I realize though - there are movie teasers, and movie trailers. The teasers, I find, are FAR superior. They just tickle you a tiny bit and you get super excited to see what's to come. 'An American Werewolf in London' has my favourite teaser of all time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1JCVOPVGts
I purposely avoid some trailers because they just give too much away and are far too predictable. All in all, I'd love to see more teaser style trailers, and as you said, to take more risks. Get me excited. 'Malignant' has that top/down camera angle that was pretty refreshing, but the editing pace was the same.
@WarGreymon77: Much better. Although I thought the first :30 seconds was a video game and animated for some reason. It lit, or shot in a weird way that gives off that effect.
