Real Time Strategies: (RTS) a term that pretty much any serious gamer at least knows, or is extremely familiar with. Most things that could be done with RTS’s have been done with RTS’s. I am a huge fan of RTS games, but I see myself getting over them. How many times can you build up an army and destroy the other guys before you just ALT+F4 it and play something else.
There are loads and loads of absolutely amazing RTS games out there, like Star Craft Brood War, Warcraft III, C&C Generals, Dawn of war 40,000. There are countless RTS games that exist and that are original in there own way.
Well I think there is one more thing they can add that I think wasn’t appreciated enough. I played a game called dungeon keeper II, great game for what it was. The one aspect I really liked about it was the ability to controller one of your monsters via FPS perspective (first person shooter). Taking controller of you’re monster didn’t make them any better or stronger, just gave you control of the monster with cool down for attacks and spells and such. I think that more games should have such an option, but not as elaborate as casting some spell to “take control” of his mind. Merely if you wanted to at any point just for kicks, you can take control of one of your chars being a hero, tank, solder what have you, which would be a lot of just plain fun. Not strategically helpful but just fun.
Some would say, “Well it would take a lot of designing to do so”. Well this is true and some would say that they would rather them spend the time to make the game perfect then add such factors to a game that doesn’t need it. This would also be a good point. But I doubt that I’m the only person that thinks the way that I do, and if they could add such an option would make playing such a game that much more entertaining to be able to see it from that perspective as well. In this view you wouldn’t be able to controller anything else except your character, I’m just saying this simple little add on would probably spice up some new RTS’s. One example of how I think using the FPS mode in an RTS that is just plain fun/cool would be like knowing that your going to win the battle, you send in the rest of your team to finish them off, and you take control of your hero and lead the attack. All in all I’m merely just putting it out there and hoping that they can add something new to the RTS world.
P.S. Kudos to:
Warcraft III for there hero leveling system which was great.
Red Alert 2 & C&C Generals for their unit advancements.
Battle for Middle Earth II for their customized heroes.
These where some games that I really fell in love with because of such little aspects to that where designed.
