Rate my rig!

Intel core 2 duo E6600

EVGA Nforce 680Sli Skt 775 Atx board

QTY. 2 Western Digital / Caviar SE 16 / 250GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-300 / Hard Drives

Ultra / X-Finity / 800-Watt / ATX / Dual 80mm Fans / SATA-Ready / SLI-Ready / Active PFC / Power Supply

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit

EVGA 8800GTX standard

I just built it today, after I got the rest of my parts from New Egg!

Killfox

Pretty average high end system. 8/10

Yeah you could say average yet it will play every single game maxed out and for quite a long time. 8800ultra is a waste and so is quad core. Ive seen CPU tests between the two and they are not that derastic.

I second Killfox on that. Most of these new technologies are good for people that have applications made to make use of multiple processors and multiple gpus. The avarage gamer has games like CoD2, WoW, CoH, Supreme Commander, etc. That have yet to make use of the power these new rigs can pack.

Even though, you sure have a good system that will last for quite a bit, now that's something I would like to have.

Therefore, until you see a Game [Crysis, I think] or application [3Ds Max 10 or AutoCAD 2007] that supports these beast from the ground up, you will not see their true performance.

Nice PC you got there, have you overclocked it yet?

jashua-jash

Nice! Now I know I am not the only one who likes to keep his oldest of his systems running top par!

Thanks for the reply, and what do you think of the new system I am setting up. I am thinking of sticking a nice 8800GT on that thing. I'll do SLI when I come back from Iraq and the prices have gone done.

The only case that was SFF had a socket 939 motherboard and at the same time it allows me to use my DDR400 memory that I had already. Remember, budget gaming pc. I did look for an am2 based microATX but it required me to spend a lot more on processor, buy new memory and reconsider the hardware that I already had.

So pretty much, I know the socket is dying, but it did save me some money, and the processor is dual core.

Dunno if this is a good enough reason, but when I come back from Iraq, if I can find a microATX motherboard that will fit in my existing case, then I will consider a rebuild. But for now, I preferred not to spend so much money on it.

Thanks for replying!

All right, time for my first post!

My current rig is old!

ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe

P4 3.0-E GHz @ 3.105 478 HT-enabled 1MB Cache 800MHz FSB @ 830MHz overclocked[Prescott](been able to oc to 3.17, generally not a great overclock-er without some good cooling.)

4 GB DDR400 @ ~207MHz 3.0Ca's 3Ra's to Ca's 3Ra's precharge 8tras (not so good...)

2 HDs, 1 SATA @ 120GB [Maxtor] and 1 PATA 100GB [Maxtor] (Don't blame me on the brand!)

Sapphire (ATI) X1650PRO AGP DDR3 256MB

1 GB integrated LAN [Marvell Yukon]

Nothing special, just that this rig is 2 to 3 years old!

This rig was made out of necessity when I bought the processor and my other rig did not support it [see below].

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This would be the first rig I made, currently as a server [Win2003 SP2 R2 Enterprise]

Intel D865PERL

P4 2.60 GHz 478 HT-enabled 512Kb 800MHz FSB[Northwood](Intel mobo's don't overclock so easily!)

4 GB DDR400 same timing as above but running at stock 200Mhz [PC3200]

9 HDs!, for a total size of 2,100 GB (2.1TB) [rounded off] and yes! I do plan to switch them out to bigger, less, and more power efficient drives.

No video card [It is a server and those drives suck so much power that the best power supply I found was custom made, lol]

Intel PRO1000MT Dual Server Adapter [Yay, I do have my network setup as a 1GB (2GB effective), great for those LAN Parties with 30 or more people.

This was my first rig and thru the years it has now become my file server [really good at it(99.9% up-time)], it also serves as a web server to test my web site before they go into production.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd system!

A laptop....

Bought it in Iraq because I was lonely without no Internet and I needed a small portable rig!

Dell Inspiron 9300 1.60GHz Pentium M @ 533MHz FSB, Centrino complaint

Nvidia 6800GO (my first Nvidia!) 256MB PCI-e (my first PCI-e!)

80GB stock drive with all the scrap-ware removed (I asked Dell to not install any of it)

This is my first and last laptop for now, and it's more like my second system since I bought it before the first system posted.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now, for my current project:

I call it, Codename: Traveller; since this rig is going with me on my next deployment [ June 9, 2007].

It's not exactly the newest thing out there, but it is certainly not the oldest.

For those who want to find out details with some nice pics, you can see it on my personal blog.

For those lazy bums, here are the details:

Ultra Box - nForce 4 SLI Socket 939 [my first nVidia-base system]

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Toledo 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor [my first AMD, 64 bit, and dual core CPU!]

4 GB Memory DDR400 [Great! I can reuse memory!]

I plan to get this system those Hitachi 1TB that are floating around and set up a RAID config or the like. But for now, a 500 GB will do the job just fine until the funds come in!

And for the temporary killer;

EVGA 512-P2-N635-AR Ge-Force 7950GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 KO Video Card
which I plan to set up as SLI when I get back from Iraq and have my 2 to 3 TB hds humming inside this thing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So! What do you think of my builds;

From my old ones to my new one, please rate it and complain to it, tips and laughs are welcome. But please keep in my that it is a budget [kinda] gaming system and it is meant to be portable.

Also, how do you think I can improve my current builds, maybe I should just get rid of them and put them on eBay, or not. Since they have proofed to be very reliable [specially my server], should I keep them for years to come.

What do you think! Help a buddy out. And thanks beforehand for all the great posts and awesome rigs that are discussed under this topic and GameSpot Forum!

Update # 1

I just got my processor [AMD 64 X2 3800+ Toledo 2.0GHz ...], my cooling fan [Zalman Ultra Quit CPU Cooler 7000B-AlCu LED].

I already mounted them on my barebone system, and I was surprised of the easiness of the installation of this custom cooling unit. It only took me 25 minutes to install the CPU-thermal compound-cooling unit assembly.

Now, I also recalculated my funds, and I found out I miss calculated a few couple of $50's so instead of the $219 video card from above, I actually have $307.95 available for the new video card!

So, I ask you, taking in consideration shipping and the components that I am using;

What would you recommend me as a good video card for this system?

While at the same time, if you follow the few guidelines:

Keep it nVidia [Motherboard is an nForce 4 SLI] and SLI Capable.

Minimum 512MB DDR3 RAM [Need it for my one actual hobby, 3ds Max 10]

HDPC-enabled video card, does not have to be DX-10 as long as it has two DVI ports and it fits in a single slot. [I am planning on going SLI later on, so I can use all $300 for the card [~$7.95 shipping - UPS Ground] and I don't mind dropping $300 on this system]

And one last thing!

If the motherboard is EVGA, should I consider an EVGA graphics card? Would it be any different if I just get an XFX?

I know that this is a lot of read, and a lot to ask from you, but no matter how many systems I built before, this is my first try at an SLI-capable, Dual Core, AMD-based, while at the same time, portable enough for a LAN Party.

So, I will be waiting for your recommendations and hopefully, I can actually play a game without stutteting and lagging!

Thanks!
