There are games you love, you play countless hours, you discuss online, patch and mod, and after months, you forget about them. It happens. One day they're the best thing after sliced bread, the next they're just wasting GBs on your harddrive or gathering dust onto your shelves. And then, there are those games that maybe you even liked less, that you played seldom, and yet that somehow, remained into your memory, and keep returning at regular intervals. They weren't great, they weren't the best you've played, and yet... they were catchy. Here's two of my addicting games (more to come):
Black and White: There wasn't really that much to do into this one, other than spy onto your little felas as they were going from home to fishing, and then retired at night leaving their light on.
Myth, the fallen lords: You probably don't know (or don't remember, or don't want to admit), but once upon a time there was a software company who developed games firstly on the Macintosh platform, and subsequently on the PC (no consoles back then). Those games were usually famous for the gritty storylines, good visual direction and interesting characters. One of these games was Myth, one of the first RTS to sport a 3d visual (voxels at that time if I remember correctly) and a deep and great story. I've never palyed this game ever since, but I still find myself thinking about the animated intro (top notch) as well as the incredible narration, being conveyed as the diary of a common soldier, fighting his way among snowy mountains and abandoned cities. Anyway for those wondering, that software house was Bungie. Does the name rings any bell?
3) GTA San Andreas: Despite the fact that I've never actually finished it, I really have fond memories of this one. Plenty of variety, sunshine, and tons of fun humor. Weird enough, while I found GTAIV to be better in almost any way, GTASA left more its mark.
2) Mirror's edge. I hated this one. The gameplay was frustrating, the story was weak, the graphics were a mixed bag to say the least. And yet, I can't help but singing the ending song over and over, and my mind immediately goes back to the ultrabright sunlight and vibrant oranges and blues.
1) Mafia. One of the most underrated games of all times (ok, the PS2 and Xbox conversions were an insult), and yet my favourite. There's something strange about this game, it might be the atmosphere, the lighting of Lost Haven, the music. I admit it, the single player was good, but the freeride was mostly a joke, a late thrown in to play in the same ballpark as GTA was playing. And still, I sometimes go back to this and wander around Lost Haven (doing nothing) even when Liberty city is much more lively and playable. I don't know, I'm addicted.
