I believe that its wrong and definately not cool, but I think the percentage of true racists is actually much smaller than your 47%. The problem is that teens and young adults are the majority of live members, and these same people are listening to the rap & hip hop that uses the language to a great extent. They're also influenced by the similar movies. My brother in law is a fine example. He's got black friends, doesn't have a hateful bone in his body, but he'll drop it in conversation because its part of his sphere of influence.
While I don't think it's okay, I think that the black community of music has brought the word into the mainstream. Unless they reverse course, its only going to get more popular in use by kids who don't understand why it isn't appropriate. Although, maybe it could be time for society to move past a word.
