There is a serious question I have been thinking about the past week. Why is time travel depicted the way it is in film and on the small screen. The future isn't set, people changing the past, going back trough the past, it's all a little silly. It's like they had a meeting years ago where it was decided what kind of message would be constantly shoved down our throats. The next time you see see a movie or show involving the the past or future here are a few things to keep in mind.
The future. It is until it isn't. In quantum theory an event hasn't happened until viewed upon by an outside party. Shrodinger's Cat basically. When in the course of events a person sees the future then those events have happened and what has already happened is no longer the future. We see characters getting still frame images of scenes sometimes years in advance of their happening and the person will alter their own actions to try and alter these events they have been witness to. As far as I can tell the only reason you should modify your behavior based on the knowledge of future events is if you know all of the preceding moments leading up to that event. That's really the only way that you could hope of doing anything about it.
The past. It's done and gone. I have heard it said that if some one will travel through to the past it would have already happened. That would be true if the person traveled to a time in recorded history and made a big enough difference to get noticed. Something to keep you up at night, if some one kills your dad in the past no one will know you didn't exist to care that you don't. To expand on that if something in the past is changed we a world won't know. That's the great thing about the past it's always going to be there to mess up. Another explanation on the absence of our time-traveling friends is that that did their deeds in our future but to them their past. So if you get the chance to go back in time do what you like because it's already changed everything irrevocably. So if you want to go get drunk with the Romans En Veno Veritus my friend.
That's it. Now bugger off.
