Starfox Assault - Finished

Starfox is a franchise that's been a big part of my life ever since the SNES version was released.  I went to extraordinary lengths back in 1992 to get myself an import copy (back in the days before the internet this wasn't such an easy task). This led on to Starfox 64 a couple years later, discovering the furry fandom through lylat.net and so forth. Starfox is a big deal to me.

This game however was lacking. It was far too short by a mile and once again (the major gripe with the series) it has a story which has moments of potentially going somewhere deeper but then which ultimately leads to nothing. Fox's relationship with Wolf, you want a big FinalFantasy-esque dialogue scene to take place but it never does. Falco & Fox's love/hate relationship, again it's hinted at continously game after game but it never resolves to anything. Krystal replacing Peppy in the series isn't so great.

Maybe this generation of gamers need a female to keep interest. But Peppy will always be the real team member to the old school starfox crowd. What ever happened to Katt Monroe anyway?.

I did like that Starwolf went good in this game though. When you've been playing the Starfox games for over a decade it's a real pivot point for the fan when something like that happens.

In the likelyhood a new Starfox game does come out on the Wii, they should really address the story issue. It'd make the game on par with the N64 version and all the fond memories it contained. I do own the DS game, but it's not something for which I particulary keen to continue. The multiplayer is kind of fun though.
