I would like to preface the GOTY considerations by saying that 2004 is by far the best year for new games coming out in the history of video games IMO. Also 2005 has the potential to be even better than 2004 so it is a great time to be a gamer.
This year my game of the year is going to be limited to the xbox, GC and PS2 because i haven't played any other system's games that came out this year.
My requirements for a game to be eligible for game of the year.
Must take at least 30 hours to beat the game the first time through
must give me a reason to want to come back and play it more after i have beat it
must make me get frustrated at points and time through the game because of the difficulty of the game(I want a challenge that i really have to think about different ways to approach a situation in order to be able to get past a point in the game)
I have to go holy **** at some point in the game whether it is because of storyline, graphics, I am scared by something occuring in the game, or i am just intimitadated by what i am about to face.
I have to feel like i have really accomplished something and enjoyed the whole experience after i have beat the game.
My considerations for game of the year this year:
Ninja Gaiden
Rainbow Six Three Black Arrow
Games that are yet to come out that are up for consideration:
Halo 2
Ghost Recon 2
Prince Of Persia Warrior Within
Gran Turismo 4
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
At this point I would have to say that Ninja Gaiden is the front runner. It has amazing graphics, you really have to learn a new way to fight in this game that is different than any game i have played before. It is definitely high on the difficulty level not only in fighting, but also in problem solving. There are several times in the game that I was highly intimidated by in this game. Starting on the level 2 boss, but also including alma in chapter 7, the dragon skeleton in whatever chapter, and the flury of bosses that you have to fight in that one stage near the end. This game took me well over 30 hours to beat and I did not use a guide to help me in this game. This is just flat out one of the best games i have ever played. My only complaint is how easy the last boss is, i guess team ninja just felt sorry for you, but i would have liked the last boss to be more difficult. With the ability to unlock NG 1-3 and downloadable content you can play this game for a very long time. Finally the surprise ending to the story totally caught me be surprise and was a good touch. The only reason that this game has left itself open for competition for GOTY is because the last boss is so easy. I honestly believe that Halo 2 is the only game that has a shot at taking this title away and bungie will have to do a phenomonal job to do that. I highly doubt that they will be up to the challenge. Also of note is that there are a couple of games that come out in the first three months that would have been considered. Including Forza, Jade Empire, and Star Wars Republic Commando.
My past GOTY list is as follows:
Please Note my GOTY list is for games that I have played which will be for xbox, ps2, and GC in 2001-2004, 2000 and prior will be for nintendo and playstation and PC games only.
