Simplicity's Sewing Instructions Are Simplistic.

And make my brain hurt.

I decided to make something! My brother is doing his cosplays, so knowing him as well as I do, I figured he's going to ask me a bunch of questions, which he does, and I decided to make something. :3

First, these instructions when it comes to sewing makes my brain hurt. Basic instructions are great and all, but when I don't know what a dart is or what it's talking about when it comes to gathering fabric, my brain feels like it melted by the sheer confusion of it. D:

"To gather upper edges of front and side panels between small dots and between small dot and notch on back panel. Stitch along seam line and 1/4" (6mm) INSIDE seam line and using a long machine-stitch."

If you're still trying to figure out what the first sentence is trying to say, don't worry about it. I think they need a proofreader before they print their instructions because, personally, the period should be a comma in order to make sense.

That or they completely forgot something in the first sentence.

My brother is also asking me questions about sewing instructions, but this time dealing with pictures and McCall's (they're pretty much like Simplicity when it comes to patterns, but more detailed, I think). First, he decided to ask me about the whole "with nap" thing. My answer:

Me: Uhhh (my little imaginative head: ??????)

Then he asks me about notches.

Brother: What are those triangle thingies on the patterns?

Me: They're notches.

Brother: Am I supposed to cut them out or...?

Me: You're supposed to draw the other half, creating a diamond. They're supposed to help line up the fabric.

Brother: Ohh. Wait, they are? o_o

He can figure all the other stuff on his own. >__> Good luck with that, too. I'm so not helping him, especially the nap thing.

And now here's what I made. :3

I still have the zipper to put in and the hook and eye. After that, all done!

I hate patterns and sewing instructions.

ETA: "With nap" is talking about the fabric. E.g., fabrics with nap: velvet and velour.
