Episode 14 - Bohemian Rhaposdy

Episode 14 - Bohemian Rhaposdy

Someone is hijacking gates but whenever bountry hunters go after them, all they receive as clues are chess pieces. The people who hijack the gates plant a hacking device on it and every person's bank account that is used to pay the gate toll is drained of money.

Spike, Jet, and Faye realize that the hacking units are too common to use as clues, but that whoever was planting them on the gates had to have knowledge about the gate system. Ed realizes that the chess pieces are able to active a chess game though the Internet and that the whole operation is a game to this person. When Jet goes to see the people who posted the bounty for more information, he bugs the office. Sitting outside, he hears the name "Chessmaster Hex".

Jet contacts the Bebop with the name and Spike and Faye find out that Chessmaster Hex is a genius programmer that had worked on the early gate system. Discovering a flaw, he had tried to protest the program, but the company fired him and built the gates anyway. Asking Ed for help, Ed replies that she's too busy playing chess...against Chessmaster Hex. The crew of the Bebop track Chessmaster Hex to a conglomeration of abandoned gates and other ships that people have been living in. While Spike and Faye try to find Chessmaster Hex, Ed keeps playing the game. However, once they find Chessmaster Hex, he asks that they be quiet and just let him finish his game.

Spike realizes that Hex suffers from senility and does not remember the past 50 years, that the hacks had been planted earlier. Going back to the company that placed the bounty, Jet asks that they leave Chessmaster Hex alone as payment.
