After discovering the truth about the Stone, Ed is faced with a difficult decision whether or not to continue his research. The two brothers are completely disheartened with their discovery. Respectfully, Ross has decided to leave the brothers alone and allow them to solve their own ethical issues. Unwilling to give up, Al begs Ed to resume his research, but Ed has already given up. Believing that nothing a person ever does it pointless, Ross tells Ed that because he is a child, he is afraid of losing the answer and afraid of admitting that everything he has done up until now has been pointless. Her talk with Ed instills some motivation in Ed and reminds him to never lose sight of his goal and to never give up. Upon re-reading Marco's note to him, Ed gets an idea. According to the data, creating the Philosopher's Stone requires a large-scale alchemy lab. Studying a map, Al points out the 5th Laboratory which was shut down and near a prison. Ed deduces that the research must have been conducted there because the prison served at a human parts bin for the researchers. Because if was formerly under the control of Gran, the site seems even more ideal. Ed and Al decide to head to the 5th Laboratory to search the premises of the lab themselves. However, Ross manages to convince Ed and Al to stay put where it is safe while her and Bloch search the lab instead. Even after their promise to stay put, Ed and Al sneak out anyway. While Ed is busy sneaking into the 5th Laboratory, Scar has appeared at the dormitories and is in search of Ed. He finds their room empty but spots the map with the 5th Laboratory circled and darts out the window before he can be caught by the military. Elsewhere in the city, Lust and Gluttony meet up with Envy who has just finished tying up lose ends in Lior. Ed has finally made it inside the building and finds traps hidden at every step. Reaching the end of the corridor, Ed enters a hall only to find an opponent waiting for him. He is known as Number 48. Outside, Al is suddenly attacked by a character by the name of Number 66.
