@zmanbarzel: Yeah, the combat was a bit lacking but I think it's definitely one of the better games I've played this year just because it did something different. Nier: Automata tops my list because it doesn't really fail in anything it tries to do. It broke new ground & excelled at doing it.

Nier: Automata is absolutely my GOTY. It's not just a great action game, it makes you think about games differently. Even the way you slot skills is brilliant - if you want to give up some UI elements, you can actually slot in more skills. The way this game blends mechanics & narrative is like no other, the mashup between "bullet hell" & character action is done in such a clever way & when further mechanics are added or taken away, it has real meaning.

If you love games, PLAY THIS!!! You won't regret it.

@mdinger: It can be an indicator of what was best but it can miss out truly great gems that not so many people played.

@xenomorphalien: Yeah, & Mario Kart should be in 2D & have more jumping.

Face it, this is a well known face to sell a new franchise because big publishers are too scared to actually invest in any new IP. Just accept that this is something new & different, judge it on it's own merits rather than expecting it to be like a game series that was already done to death. You'll be in for less disappointment.

I love these kind of games but they mess with my inner completionist so much! I need to collect all the things!

@MJ12-Conspiracy: You must have been living under an internet rock if you've never heard of cryptocurrencies until just recently. There have been all sorts of controversies about Bitcoin & others over the past few years.

It's pretty useless as an actual currency due to it's volatility but it's essentially like investing in a stock - buy low, sell high. One of my friends built a small mining rig recently & is starting to invest in some cryptocurrency, he's convinced he'll make money out of it but he'll still be OK if he loses what he put in.

In terms of being shady, that's just old people being scared of new tech. People say stuff like, "you can't track who has it, criminals can use it to buy guns & drugs", but the same thing is true of cash.

@Thanatos2k: According to who?

If you click the "about Gamespot's scores" link above the number, you'll find that 7=good. Judge the score they give by what they say it means. Judge another site's scores by their own measure.

The sooner GS & other sites drop scores completely, the better. This seemed like a pretty positive review to me. If people actually paid attention to the content of the review & not just the number at the end, we might be able to have some more intelligent conversations.

@Tangsta03: Did we watch/read different reviews?

He said it's a fun game, well balanced although with somewhat lacking tutorials. The story isn't amazing but it's compelling enough to keep playing for close to 100 hours. There's a minigame that feels like a grind but the main game is satisfying & rewarding. Over all it's "good" - a 7.

I haven't heard much about this game before but this review kinda made me want to play it.

@hardcoregamer1: A 7's not a low score.

@ablaynedivided: Why would someone have to be a fan of something to review it?

If you want a hardcore JRPG fan's opinion, I'm sure there are plenty of other reviews out there. For mainstream audiences who are less familiar, those kinds of reviews would be less valuable.

I don't play a tonne of JRPGs but I have played some in the past. This review actually sounded pretty positive to me. It mentioned a lot of the classic JRPG stuff that is kinda bad & hasn't evolved, which is good to know. If he simply glossed over the bad voice acting because "all Japanese games do it", then it would be dishonest.
