Lisa31468 has become yet another victim to corporate over-reaching and over-reacting.
For those who haven't heard, she's leaving TV.com because some higher-ups andholier-than-thous attempted to correct a wrong in the wrong way.
Instead of using normal means of investigating an offense like verifying sources and finding all the holes in a story, whoever wanted to discover who leaked six photo stills from the Season 3 Avatar premiere invaded Lisa31468's privacy and basically said to her that she's been watched and will be watched from now on.
And for what?
For simply being an Avatar fan.
So much for innocence before guilt. Today's press-driven soundbite society looks to crucify anyone labeled as "aberrant" or "diseased" or "deviant" when nothing has even happened or even when the facts are far from whoever invented a new truth. To quote one scientist, "We must be careful not to twist facts to fit theories when in reality we should change theories to fit the facts."
While Nick rightfully so wanted to find the source of the leak, invading someone's privacy? *buzz* Wrong answer, McFly! Nick had finally done so many classy things with Avatar recently to only get blown back to the Stone Age with this cr*p.
Theoretically, all Lisa did was SQUEEEEEE about some new nugget of Avatar fandom that we all know and love and will gladly pass on. Theoretically, those frames should never have been released. Did Lisa31468 know this? Not till later. But later was too late. Theoretically, no one should have even talked to her about it. As soon as she posted links to something that had a link from a link from a link from a link from a link, she was guilty by association ten times removed from the situation. (I am your father's, brother's, cousin's, nephew's former roommate. What does that make us? Absolutely nothing.)
What Mel Brooks said tongue-in-cheek is exactly what happened here...there are many rungs on the ladder of information coming from Avatar, and they should have started from Nick and gone down, not the other way around. Isn't it easier to interview only a handful of staff who have had their hands on these drawings rather than follow dozens if not hundreds to thousands of postings on the internet? Come on. This should have been a trickle-down, not a percolate-up effect.
We are just fans. Innocent fans. We're not an evil Dark Lord trying to take over the galaxy, we're just an innocent clone amongst millions caught in the wave of excitement over the new season.
What happened was a witch hunt! In order to get the "real" culprit, they find the underlings who can implicate the next one up the ladder and so on and so forth. Lisa became another Scooter Libby... she took a fall first as being a domino that stood between her and the real person from higher up in Nick-land who should be summarily fired.
In a culture where we believe that a company is directly responsible for one's choices in life because they have lots of money and can be sued instead of accepting personal responsibility, the reverse is also true. We also believe that because we have a lot of money, we can do whatever we want (case in point: gasoline prices). By we, I mean "we" as a society in America today.
Lisa, you will be sorely missed on this forum and in your blog. Nowhere have I found a more intelligent, well-read, respected, funny, classy, and gracious Avatar fan. I'll never forget your creation of the term "AWS" and its current widespread use. I'm so sorry that you have been victimized by evil Corporate America who sets out to make examples of innocents.
I hope you find peace with this situation and at least continue to enjoy Avatar within yourself if not on here.
I'm sorry that you no longer have fun being on these forums... when the fandom's no longer fun, it's time to give it up. You were a pleasure to read, defend, post about, and talk to on these boards and can think of no one who did things with more poise and class.
I don't blame you for leaving and may you have many more years of Avatar fandom.
Sincerely,
bdllbo
