I second anyone who said X-COM and would like to add Masters of Magic. Deus Ex with the source engine would be great also. Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series and Planescape Torment are high on the list. Great thread!

Great Topic Thread! I have been waiting for twelve patient years for an updated Masters of Magic! That just might be my favorite game of all time. It was basically Civilization in a fantasy world where you researched different spells instead of technologies. I believe that it came out before Magic the Gathering card game but it used the same five colors of magic system. The game was great for it's day (1994 or so) but Soooo much more could be done with it with todays technology. The gameplay actually still holds up by today's standards pretty well but the graphics and sound are 1994. I'd be happy if they updated it with CIV IV tech but truthfully I was not that impressed by CIV IV.

I woulddefinitely second the gamer who said X-COM: UFO Defense! I am currently playing UFO: Extraterrestrials which is being billed as the spiritual successor to X-COM: UFO Defense. It's OK (particularly with mods) but the graphics and sound are 1999 at best and the gameplay needs balanceing and work. It's still the best X-COM like game to come out since the original but it leaves me wanting more.

I could probably think of others but those are the main two.

I have been a loyal Gamespot member for about 10 years and read the forums regularly but have rarely posted.  Now I need some serious help.  I have UFO:  Extraterrestrials and love it but the game seriously lacks in some areas and fortunately there is a great modding community that has fixed most all of the bugs and made some great (and much needed) gameplay enhancements.  I have been playing games litterally since PONG first came out in the mid '70's but have never installed a mod before in my life.  I read a lot of forums about modding and many of them were very good.  I tried to follow them step by step and kept running into problems.  I couldn't do exactly what they said so I tried to improvise and suddenly my game wouldn't even load.  I uninstalled my game and re installed it.  I deleted the modding files and applications and re-downloaded them 3 times to make sure they weren't corrupt.  I started over from scratch and am running into the same problems as I was before.  My game is in Matrix\UFO\Data.  I have downloaded xbig into my download file as well as xbig.blank.  I am trying to install bman's mod and have that downloaded into my download file in zipped format.  Please help a long time and loyal gamespotter!

I'm 38 years old.  I've been a gamer since my Atari 2600 and Space Invaders.  That was the first system I ever owned.  The first game I ever played was the original Pong back in 1974.  I thought it was so neat that you could actually control the paddles on the TV screen!
