Movie Review- The Colors Within

I didn't even know this film existed after hearing about from a few friends on social media, it's one of those films that had very little advertising and under the radar for many films like Sonic 3, Mufasa and Nosferatu being popular at most cinemas across the UK. What did surprise me that the director, Naoko Yamada directed this movie which many fans will know created A Silent Voice back in 2016 still one of the most memorable films out of his works. His recent film The Colors Within just recently got an English release while the Japanese version was released a few months ago; I did watch this in Subs which was the only screenings they had in my area but know that a few other cinemas had the Dub version depending on what time you were seeing it during the day after release.

Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the 'colours' of others. Colours of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a colour she treasures as her favourite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful colour of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practise at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true 'colours'?

I did like the colourful effects when Totsuko describes in what she sees in people really a strong touch making the film really interesting to watch when it comes to art and culture. However, there was the odd moment that did feel like if this was made into a 12 episode anime series I could easily see a few people being turned away from it after the first 4 or five episodes; luckily that's not the case it does hold up a good reputation keeping it together on the main story expressing emotions, making music and making friends. There were a few moments that made me laugh and the songs towards the end did feel catchy to listen with good sounding; It might not be as perfect as A Silent Voice on terms of storytelling or memorable moments The Colors Within will be one of those films that will feel forgotten on the film at the same time will be a word of mouth on how good it is by the time you've seen it would recommend it to anyone if you get the chance.
