The reson Sonic is such a big deal being in SSBB is because you now have the two biggest icons in Video Game history in one. Yes I know, Mario Vs. Sonic at the Olympics is released before but you will also have Sonic in a game with Link, Samus, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc. Mario, Link, Samus, and Sonic (and a few others like Kirby) are well established figures in video games. Master Chief has been in a total of 3 games (and still sucks in my opinion). SSBB is the first game in its series that is truely going to feature the best of the best. The best gaming franchise figures of ALL-TIME. The only one that will probably left out is Mega Man but really Mega Man has gone downhill and pathetic with that whole Zero thing.
The fact that Nintendo is allowing so many 3rd party characters into SSBB is a great sign for the future of Nintendo as it may open doors for more 3rd party compinies. Of course many have expressed concern about the Wii, even as to date (idiots). But the fact is that a game on the Wii WILL NOT USE motion controls, SSBB will not use it, and this should show third party companies that as long as you produce a quality game, you do not have to rely on motion sensoring.
That is why Sonic is big because it shows Nintendo's willingness this generation to open up to third party companies and that they do not have to follow the Wii specifics exactly. That and Sonic is the man.
