I wonder if the whole roguelike thing is simmering out. Maybe players would like consistent, non run-based progress again; especially those without an abundance of free time who enjoy the thrill of "getting to the next part" within their half hour a day they have to play. Or why not both? Add a "Rogue" mode to games, which resets all progress upon death and does away with checkpoints, I dunno.
